I was wondering this yesterday as I got my teeth cleaned. I usually keep them open, but sometimes I close them. It's kind of an awkward situation to keep them open.

I always close them. My eyes are sensitive to light and I get a headache if I keep them open (in direct light like that) for longer than a few seconds.

@delight: I've never figured out how to chat. they ask me questions and then I'm like... ummm how do I answer while they're scraping my teeth?

@Mrs. Pen: Haha. It'd be different if you were good friends with your dentist, much more comfortable talking with stuff in your mouth, you don't feel quite as awkward!

@Jellyfish: abhor is the perfect word for trips to the dentist.
Closed. It's kinda weird, I mean, there's a person basically in your face working in your mouth...

I do a mixture. Sometimes I stare off at nothing or the tv and other times I close them. I think it just depends on how "in my face" they are....
I dentists.

@.twist.: I love the dentist, too! Teeth cleaning is the best.
@MamaPhoenix: what do most people do in your experience?

@fussygal: Most often they close their eyes. I've had every type of person in that chair. From those that white knuckle the arm rest to those that fall asleep and Loudly snore throughout a procedure.

I was at the dentist today and closed my eyes. The light is too bright. I joked that I might fall asleep and they said they have mouth props.

Yes, I always close my eyes and sometimes I even put headphones in for the cleaning because I absolutely hate when they talk to me and ask questions while they have all their tools in my mouth!

I usually just stare beyond the dentist or hygienists face to the ceiling or something.

I close my eyes and give myself a pep talk the entire time. "It's ok, you are an adult, this isn't that bad, this will be over soon…" I REALLY hate going to the dentist!!!

My dentist gives those kind of reflective sunglasses so they can't really see your eyes anyway, and has a TV installed in the ceiling and you listen to it on headphones, so I just watch that.

@SugarplumsMom: do they give you sunglasses to wear? My dentist has them!

I HATE going to the dentist, I do both but mostly closed because I am praying the whole time for it to end soon.

Always close my eyes. Not because I hate being there, but because it just seems awkward to be looking up that close to the dentist!

Closed, I feel awkward keeping them open with the dentist or hygienist so close.

I do when they start the deep cleaning stuff and my mouth is open super wide. I close my eyes partially because I'm cringing.

i switch back and forth. I also watch the TV. the dentist i have now is the first to have a TV up close and provide headphones and a remote, so it is actually pretty nice!

I cry at the dentist. that's what I do. LOL (but that's a whole 'nother story of dentist phobia!)

I keep them closed most of the time, but I will open them a little (like when the hygienist talks to me).

I used to look away and avert my eyes from the dentists eyes. But now DH is my dentist so I have no problem staring right at my handsome guy

I close my eyes during the teeth cleaning b/c one time i had a big chunk of toothpaste fly up and hit me in the nostril and now I'm paranoid that will happen again, but in my eye.

@Sapphiresun: They give us sunglasses too, but we dont have fancy tvs or anything
When i have procedures done, I always bring headphones and i tell the dentist i'm going to just check out while you do your thing, tap my shoulder if you need me and i turn the volume way up.... i cant stand the sound of the drills
