Yes, but of course the touristy places: I've been to Puerto Vallarta and know plenty of people who have been to Cancun and Riviera Maya and loved them.

Mexico is amazing! I have been on vacation so many times. I've been to a resort in Cabo San Lucas, but I've also done the city thing and stayed at swanky hotels in Mexico City. It was a lot of fun.

I have been to Cancun twice and Riviera Maya once and I felt safe!

We just booked a trip to Cancun for march actually. I feel very safe with my husband and we won't go far off resort.

Yes, depending on where you go. We are big fans of the Yucatan Peninsula (Mayan Riviera) and it is quite safe there.

Like anywhere (even your own home town) you need to have your wits about you, but yeah, I think it can definitely be safe. There are areas that I would avoid though, too.

I backpacked around Mexico for 4-5 weeks 3 summers ago all by myself. I started by flying into Guadalajara (2nd largest city in Mexico, kind of central), and visited Tlaquepaque, Tequila, Guanajuato, Morelia, Mexico City (all over), Oaxaca for Guelaguetza (an absolutely amazing once a year festival that is incredible), then all the way down to San Cristobel de las Casas in Chiapas. I spent 4 weeks doing that, staying in hostels, couchsurfing sometimes (through the website Couchsurfing.com)....I eventually made my way to Antigua, Guatemala and stayed there 4 days before flying back from Guatemala City.

That same year, DH and I went (before we were married) with two friends to Veracruz, Xalapa, and Papantla.

None of those places were unsafe, and they also aren't touristy' mostly-gringo resorts, either.

So I'm in the "safe" camp. Of course, I was careful, and never went out alone at night (you always make friends in hostels and go out together, or I would meet people from Couchsurfing that would show their city). Of those cities, the most beautiful are Guanajuato, Oaxaca, San Cristobel, and Xalapa. They are some of the most beautiful cities I've ever seen, and I've traveled quite a bit.

Honestly, it's nicer having most Americans think its too dangerous to go, because then most of the backpackers are foreigners, which is always more fun for me.

I spent the next summer in Guatemala alone, another "dangerous" place.

I spent 3 summers really working on my Spanish-- spending summers in Argentina, Mexico, and Guatemala in that order.

I would have no problem going to Mexico. We actually booked our original honeymoon at a resort on the Yucatan peninsula but then DH got all freaked out and we cancelled the reservation. We ended up going to Hawaii instead, just because it's in the US. But if you stay to resort towns and don't travel long stretches of road, you'll be fine. Take normal travel precautions and I'm sure it'll be a fantastic trip!

All the first pics are my solo trip, the last ones (with me in them) are in Xalapa, when DH and I were just dating.

It was a hilarious trip, because we went with two of my girl friends-- a girl from Spain and a girl from Venezuela. DH was the only brown one, and also the only one who speaks NO Spanish, but everyone would take 1 look at us and talk him only! Then he would look at us in panic. Teehee. A few times, we let him sweat it out.

The only parts that I'd be hesitant to travel to is the Northern region of Mexico. We are originally from a border city and still have family that lives there (US side) and around 2006-2010 it was BAD. My hubby's family is Mexican and would always travel across the border for everything they needed and then once the violence got bad they refused to go, as well as a bunch of people they are friends with. The violence isn't as bad as it was, but we are all still very hesitant to travel if it isn't 100% necessary!

It's totally a bummer too because we would love to go to Mexico and visit hubby's family there, take vacations, do research (hubby is getting his PhD in history and it relates to Mexico), etc. but we just aren't comfortable yet. Hopefully by the time we have kids and they're older it'll be safer and we can enjoy trips there!

With that said, if it's just a resort in a vacation/tourist city then I wouldn't worry at all!

I've been to Puerto Vallarta, Cabo and Riviera Maya and loved all of them. I didn't stay at all-inclusives but felt perfectly safe. DH on the other hand swears he will never go to Mexico again. He stayed at an all-inclusive in Cancun and said everyone in his family got sick at one point or another. I never felt safety was an issue. I say go!

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Los Cabos is awesome but it is DIRTY!!! I would go again if I didn't have LO. I wouldn't take LO. Seriously...It's dirty. Like smells like garbage on the streets, restaurant bathrooms are pretty much the worst things ever to use.
Then, I went to Cozumel and it is AMAZING! Big difference. I would def take LO there.

Either way, I didn't drink anything in either place. I always bought USA bottled water. I just didn't trust the water, I guess? Other than that, I was very comfortable with the people, traveling and the safety (although I always went with DH).

Even I've been to Mexico and I live on the other side of the world!! We went to the Riviera Maya. We stayed on a resort and took organised trips out - I felt perfectly safe! I loved it and would definitely go again.

We went to Cozumel many many years ago and loved it. We stayed in an awesome little condo right by the beach. My DH took kitesurfing lessons while I suntanned. And we had a scooter rental for the week to tour around the island (although we wouldn't be able to travel this way with a baby!). My parents just went to Los Cabos and said it was fantastic and highly recommended it.

I say wherever you go, you need to be careful... Same applies to Mexico. In 2007 we went to playa del Carmen. We had so much fun!!! We went to chitchen itza (sp?) and on the way back, was surrounded by militia with automatic weapons. I really thought we were going to die! They were banging our car, yelling at us to get out of the car. One of the scariest moments of my life! Anything could have happened and no one would know! Just be careful wherever u go and try not to hang outside the resort too late.

Another vote for Mexico. Have traveled a bit around the Yucatan to see the various ruins, and highly encourage going off the resorts to get some local flavor (both food & otherwise!). I've never felt unsafe, although I never traveled to any bad neighborhoods.

The locals we've met have been, almost all very warm, welcoming, and appreciative of my near-non-exisistent Spanish skills. The ruins in the Yucatan are amazing & impressive - recommend.

If you want sun & fun, Playa Del Carmen is a great destination. Amazing beaches, drinks on the beach, lots of bars/restaurants. If you like snorkeling/scuba diving, definitely check out Cozumel. I've done combo trips to Playa/Cozumel to get in some quality diving/beach relaxation time.
