I don't swear much (unless I'm pissed at my husband, ha!) and honestly I would never use the term "fuck my life" in real life, but sometimes I use it in comments, threads (FML). I just find is less offensive. Maybe it's just me.

There's no option for "I find neither offensive". I have kind of a pottymouth, but try to filter who hears it.

I guess I sort of equate the acronyms for swearing to those that aren't swearing - for example, when I say "LOL" I'm rarely actually laughing out loud haha. So when I/people say FML, I don't really see it as anything to be offended by, if that makes sense!

I never curse IRL because my parents installed a permanent potty filter on my mouth, haha. But I do use worse language in writing. It does seem less offensive, somehow, when it's written down!

I don't curse and I don't care to read it either. I don't get offended when I hear/see it though.

I definitely drop f-bombs in real life (often in front of my best friend's daughter, ooops!), but I never say that phrase. I definitely find the acronym "FML" less offensive than spelling it out though.

@Adira: Yes! i completely agree. I hate using acronyms but when it comes to swearing that's all i use. In highschool I would say F-you and never the real word. haha.

I use things in text that I would never say in real life (unless really mad) haha. I used to have a mouth of a sailor, but have really worked on cleaning it up since becoming pregnant. My husband makes fun of me, because I say "F' or "f-er" instead of the bad words now, things like that , but that will have to end too!

Hmm I guess I should revise. I wouldn't say "FML" in real life either. I've recently taken to saying "F" instead of "f*&k" too, but the word shit is not going anywhere.
GOLD / pomelo / 5167 posts
@JoJoGirl: oh shit isn't a swear IMO. But I say CRAP more than SHIT. Even though its the same thing. ha!

I USED to be good at using substitute words like "fudge" and "sugar" for the f-word and the s-word, but I'm not as good anymore! Now I'll be like "Fuuuu-udge!" where I start to say the bad one and switch last minute when I realize who's around, haha. But if I'm just home with Hubs, the real word comes out. I'll need to get better though! I don't want to teach my kids swear words!

Swearing doesn't offend me in the slightest, written or spoken. Obviously there are times that it's inappropriate (in a business meeting, at church, etc) but in a casual setting I have no problem with swearing.

@MamaMoose: I agree with you! ALTHOUGH, there's this one guy at my work who's 4 year's from retirement, and when he gets really excited (or frustrated), he starts dropping f-bombs! In meetings, in front of the customer, anywhere! He's sooooooooo well respected, that people don't care. We've started keeping a metric of his f-bombs during our weekly meetings and our customer asked to be updated on it. They seem to think he's being more productive the more f-bombs he drops, haha.

@Adira: I think we need to get back in the habit because now, my 2 YO is starting to repeat what we say. I definitely don't want him to swear (without knowing what it means ) yikes!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Mrs. Sunglasses: Seriously! What will be worse is if he repeats it out in public! My husband used a totally inappropriate word yesterday and I was "OMG - you CANNOT use that word when the baby gets here!!! If it repeats ANYTHING you say, I'm making sure EVERYONE knows YOU'RE the source!!!!"

@Adira: hahahah!!! we don't swear really except when we are pissed at eachother, so we need to work on not being pissed in front of the kids.

I never knew what FML meant. (I think I kind of wondered if it was similar to Future Mother-in-Law?) So thanks for that.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Mrs. Sunglasses: Oh, I know what you mean! We definitely swear MORE when we're mad, although we still drop a fear curses every now and then for no reason. Definitely need to work on this!

i used a * in a bad d word on your stripper post earlier, i hope i didn't offend anyone =(
i swear... a lot... BUT only in appropriate places & not in front of kids. online i haven't given much thought to. i usually stick to mild ones, and use acronyms for more harsh ones. the f-bomb i reserve for serious occasions or i say it as eff, at home it's fair game though, DH & i both drop it frequently.

@mrs. bird: Oh no not at all. I started this thread because I used FML in a comment (on my budget post) so I was afraid that it would offend the person I was responding to.

@Adira: Hahaha oh man. We have a guy in our office who loudly yells F-bombs and it's the same thing. He's a huge producer (I work in finance) so no one question his excessive cussing : )
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@MamaMoose: Sometimes F-bombs at work are funny, haha.
ALTHOUGH, I just read an article about how swearing a work could keep you from raises or promotions, so it's definitely something MOST of us should keep in check at work!

@MamaMoose: I have found that men get a lot more leeway in the office when it comes to swearing (at least in my profession).
Even though I have no rational basis for it, I find the online swearing to be less offensive (not that I think swearing is offensive) than swearing irl because (1) here on HB we're not swearing at each other (yay!), and (2) although I can have a potty mouth, irl, sometimes the swearing can create/make for an awkward situation.

I think swearing is swearing but it generally doesn't bother me either way unless it is excessive.

IRL I still say "eff this" instead of the word...and I say "that girl is a b-word" but I won't say b****. So clearly, I'm all for acronyms haha. Less offensive i'd say. But truly, I'm not all that offended by curse words anyways *shrugs*

I think the acronyms are less offensive, but to write out the actual words is just as "offensive." Although, I don't really consider swearing (in moderation) to be offensive. I use "bad words" on the boards all the time, but didn't realize how many people on HB dislike swearing! Sorry if I've offended anyone... LOL.

I have a terrible potty mouth. Even at work (although only in my office with my 2 officemates who are VERY good friends of mine). Sometimes I hear myself and I'm like "Easy, killer...take it down a notch."

@eiko2010: hahah! that's hilarious. I wish we didn't swear so much. I grew up in a curse-less household and would LOVE to raise our kids the same.
