In the past, I would throw away everything if it was expired but now I let things stretch a day or two.
How about you?

I'll usually let things stretch a few days. But now that I'm pregnant for some reason I'm not comfortable with that any more.

I used to before I had my LO. Now I toss if it's expired.

If I notice something is expired I won't eat it. My husband will though.

I don't even like food that's still a few days from expiring. I'm paranoid.

I would not give it to my LO for sure. But if it is something like bread and it is one day expired then I will eat it. As long as it is something that I don't think will make me sick.

I mean, as long as something doesn't smell funky or have mold growing on it, I think it's usually fine.

Never, I'm weirdly paranoid about expired food, even if it's by one day.

Yup! Expiry dates don't mean that they are bad after
that date, just that they are freshest before it. I go by smell and if I'm not sure, I take a tiny taste to see if it tastes off.

Depends. Certain items the dates are sell by and certain are actually expiration dates.
Milk, never!

Depends on what food it is. If it is milk, eggs or meat then no. But if it is something like bread then I'll inspect it, touch it and smell it. If it seems fine I'll eat it.

Produce, meats, milk, juices (anything perishable) - we throw out after the expiration date.
Dry goods like cereal? - I'll eat it past the date.

The milk I buy has two different expiration dates. One from the manufacturer and another for NYC. Both are printed on the container and the NYC date is always sooner. So I'll let it go to the manufacturers expiration date as long as it doesn't smell foul. We only use milk in coffee so I probably buy it twice a month.

Yup, but I always smell and inspect the food first. If it smells and looks fine, I'll eat it. If not, trash!

I'll let most things go past the date. Like @Grace said, the date on the packaging is usually just a "freshest by" or "sold by" date. With most things, if I'm not sure about it, I'll pour a bit out and give it the smell test. My mom (a food chemist) always taught me to never smell it in the container, especially for things like milk, because the crust around the top of the container can spoil and smell sour before the stuff actually in the container is spoiled.

I do... I'm too cheap to throw it away. I give it the "sniff test" and eat if it doesn't smell. HAHA.

@MamaMoose: I'm the same way. Pre-pregnancy, I'll go for it (unless it's milk or cheese). While pregnant, I have cleaned out our pantry and fridge multiple times of condiments and canned goods.

I'm pre-pregnancy, so it depends on the product. Milk- I toss. Other things, I do the sniff test. I might be more picky when I'm pregnant.

I usually toss it but sometimes I'll look online to see people's recommendations. If it's a day or two I'll still eat it. Wagon Sr. will eat it if it's like a week or two. Yuck.

I always go by sight, smell and/or taste rather than the printed dates. I only use those as a guide, not a hard and fast rule. Sometimes things will spoil sooner or later than the date, and not all dates are expiration dates. Like others have mentioned, a lot are "best by" dates.

It depends on the food. Hubby, on the other hand, will not eat anything expired or close to expiring. I have to assure him that it's okay and I"m not trying to feed him expired food. If he thinks there is a chance that it could be bad, he will feel sick to his stomach or something like that even if I ate the same food and I'm okay.
