One of my BILs is always broke and borrows money from us from time to time. He rarely gives anyone Xmas gifts and we definitely don't expect them!
We gave him a $50 gift card to Best Buy (we give him this gift every Xmas) and he gave us a $300 gift card to Home Depot. I feel bad that he spent so much!

i would in that instance, but generally i don't feel bad because we're pretty generous with gifts.

We have so many gifts to buy so we have to get creative and usually make most of our gifts.. I feel bad when others give us really nice gifts that cost more...

My husband's uncle is always broke and asking grandparents for money and milking the system any way possible. For our wedding he gave us a $400 check. We didn't cash it because we knew it likely wouldn't clear and even if it did, we didn't want their money.
If the person is responsible with their money though and choose to spend it on us then I don't feel bad. We're very generous with our gifts too.

Yes! My dad and stepmom just bought us our crib mattress and a bunch of outfits for the baby. Then they got me a purse and a $50 Target gift card, and DH a nice pullover and a $50 Dillard's gift card. I told them they didn't need to get anything for Christmas but stepmom loves to shop!

I don't feel bad I just feel very grateful and I make a mental note to give a really generous gift next time

I definitely feel bad. I'm like Sheldon on Big Bang Theory wanting to spend the same amount (or thereabouts).
@autumnlove: Any chance he won the gift card? Or maybe he got a one-time big bonus and wanted to share? It probably made him feel very good to be generous, if he's not usually able to.

I do feel bad. I only spend what I can afford, and I won't go over. I also don't usually spend a lot on gifts because I craft/DIY a lot. So I put a lot of time into my gifts..... but not money.

It's depends on who it's from. In the situation OP described, I would feel bad. In general, I wouldn't.

Wow, I would feel bad for him if he spent that much on us. Mostly because he doesn't sound like he is very good with money.
In a normal circumstance where someone spends money on us, I don't feel bad. Everyone has different budgets for holidays or gifts. We spend what we feel is reasonable for our budget and our friends and families do the same.
