Never! I have a septic at home and I've always heard it's bad for the plumbing. Just wrap it in toilet paper and toss it.

I grew up in a house with a septic system, and my dad is an engineer who designs waste water treatment plants. So he taught us from an early age that toilet paper is all that is truly flush able.

I flush them unless there's a sign.
Edited to add: I grew up in the country and lived on a septic system until I married my husband. I've never been told not to flush them and both my sisters flush them, as well.

Never. We grew up with a septic system so I never got in the habit. I've heard too many stories now of bad clogs.

Wow, I always flush unless in public bathroom that says not too. I had NO idea so many people don't.

Never ever. I'm honestly shocked people do. I mean, you throw away a pad, right? This doesn't seem different at all to me.

I voted "yes always" but there have been exceptions. The last place I lived our toilet clogged couple of times because of them so I stopped flushing them there. But I grew up in my parents house and flushed for probably over 10 years with no issues (and then lived in subsequent apartments for another 5 years before the last one ). so I saw my last apartment as the exception not the rule. I used to even flush the cardboard applicator. I think I just use plastic now so that's why I can't say I do now.
And I can't say that today's threads will even make me stop flushing. I'm pregnant so it will be a while before my next period and I'm not sure if I'll remember or think it's a big deal by then.

I used to. Then I started using a menstrual cup instead. Then after my baby I had to use tampons because my pelvic floor was too weak to keep the cup in. But then we bought a house with a septic system, so I was throwing them away instead. And now I'm pregnant again

We have a septic tank, so I don't flush. When we used to live in the city and were on the city's sewage system, I flushed. So much easier than wrapping it up to throw out!

I am so grossed out by this and I truly thought the signs in bathrooms that said no famine products meant other stuff not the actual tampon. I know it's crazy to flush baby wipes, etc. now I feel like I'm going to have to change everything otherwise I'll feel guilty. Thanks Hellobee.

Never ever in a private home (my mom taught me early on not to) but I have a couple times in public restrooms when they do not have the little garbage attached to the wall in the stall.

@MoonMoon: I've never seen a sign that specified tampons- I assumed the more generic wording referred to pads. And I've never been somewhere without flushing toilets, nor do I anticipate going somewhere like that. Just not something I'd have occasion to do.
My dad's house has septic, and as far as I know my stepmom and little sister flush theirs. I always did when I was there. My stepmom is a major rule follower, and would have let me know real fast if I shouldn't be.

This is such an interesting thread! It's so crazy that so many of us have never considered not flushing, and vice versa. Personally, I've never flushed one, and had NO idea that other people did! Now I feel like I need to poll all my friends etc haha.

I always flushed until about age 17 when we had a major plumbing backup at my parents' house and the guy told us it was our tampons!! My sister and I were so embarrassed!
Haven't flushed since ... wrap it up with excessive amounts of tp + simple human trash can in the bathroom.
I read once that charmin tp is even too thick for some plumbing and def for septic.
And on a separate note my son threw a wipe in the toilet the other day and I debated getting it out ...but ended up flushing. Haha. I'm scared of plumbing problems.

I used to until a contractor friend told us it's one of the worst things you can flush besides wipes. He's a landlord and said there was an awful clog in one of the apartments he owns - all due to tampons. Now that we live in a house with septic, we flush nothing but TP!

I did until we had a major backup at my parents house, and tampons were the main issue. Now I trash them!

I always have without thinking...But we recently had a backup with unknown cause, and I haven't had a period yet since before I was pregnant with my now 6 month old, so it's not due to tampons, but it will make me think about not flushing them because I don't want to pay another Roto Rooter bill:)

Sometimes...growing up we had a septic system so we couldn't. Our house now has touchy plumbing so DH gets upset if he knows I flush lol. I usually flush a few every month though.

I always did. I mean, they're marketed as flushable!
But I haven't used tampons in years. One more reason to love my DivaCup.
