Yes we do - he is awesome! I could never do investing on my own - too confusing!

We do our own taxes though!

We have an accountant who deals with our taxes and my husband has a financial planner who deals with all of his investing and retirement accounts. He keeps trying to get me to go to him too but I haven't yet.

@bluestriped bee: another thing - have you seen those commercials where it shows you will need 1.1 million dollars to retire - well my financial advisor shows me how he is going to get me there - it gives me such peace of mind!!!

We don't have an accountant because our taxes are pretty straightforward, but I do have a financial advisor. I've had an account with him since I was 24ish. I never had a whole lot of money with him until I transferred my 401ks from previous companies to him. I figured if I had to pay for them (since I no longer worked for those companies), I should have them in a single location and have a cohesive investment strategy. We also opened up investment accounts for additional retirement savings and for college savings for LO.

@bluestriped bee: well the accountant and the financial planner are actually two separate people. Although I'm sure some people specialize in both! For us though, the accountant can tell us about the tax implications of what we invest in, but isn't really qualified to make recommendations about WHAT to invest in.

Yes, I've had a financial advisor since I was 27. He manages an investment account, a traditional IRA and Roth IRA. The group also has CFPs (I think that's what they're called, certified financial planner?) who does a retirement analysis on request to show us different projections based on our savings and market performance.

I'm 33 and we've had both for probably about 5 years. We have a rental property, and we wanted a tax adviser to get the most of our money with that and our current house. We also wanted to be sure that we were financially sound before we bought our current house as well, so we enlisted in a financial adviser to help with that. We still check in with him once/year and actually just met with him to start college planning for DS.

Our financial adviser has our liquid investments, our life insurance, our retirement accounts and I'm looking to move my IRA under him as well.

We do not. DH is savvy enough with money that we do not need one. For really crazy stuff we talk to our lawyer (stuff like whether we could sell a property to a holding company, stuff like that) and we do hire people to handle our business money taxes and such.

@bluestriped bee: Financial advisors actually legally can't give tax advise unless they are also CPAs!

We no longer use a tax advisor, but we did while I was living abroad because I had to file taxes in both the US and the country I was living in and we needed someone to help us with the disclosures for foreign bank accounts.

As for a financial advisor, we do not use one...we should.

We use a full-service CPA practice to do our taxes and we get an annual consultation as part of our services. They demand every single piece of financial information under the sun for our annual assessment, so while his advice is usually mostly from a tax-savings point of view, he gives us a lot of financial planning advice since he sees our entire financial picture.

We work with fidelity and they've been pretty helpful at keeping this organized for us.

We have a wealth planner and are planning on consulting with a tax advisor this year, although we do our taxes with software since they're not complicated. We are both 31 and have one child. We got the wealth planner because we have a good income but we are horrible with money and have a lot of student debt, so they have been really helpful to get us on the straight and narrow.

@SeptMomma12: that's too bad your hubs doesn't want to use a friend. I would say the most important thing in picking an advisor is finding someone you trust to take the time to really understand your goals and always do what's in your best interest. Personal referrals from friends and family are the way to go! Maybe ask your parents if they use someone? Or your boss.
