We have one, and with a baby on the way, I'm glad we have just the one dog. Once our LO is older, we will get another dog most likely.

We have two dogs, and while I love them both DEARLY, they are a ton of work and sometimes I wish we only had one (okay, maybe lots of times I wish that!) There is soo much dog hair, and then dog poop, and they wrestle and wake the baby up. There is also the issue of when we go away, it's much harder to find someone willing to watch two dogs than it is to watch one dog. We usually end up getting someone to take one dog, and someone else to watch the other dog.

Sorry to be a downer :S, but if we could do it all again, we'd have stuck with just one.

We have one high energy dog (2 years old) we've talked about getting another and definitely will at some point, but she was SOOO much work in the beginning. There is no way we could have two young Aussies with a newborn. If we had bulldogs or some other lazier breed we could do it.
I guess it depends on what type of dog and what age dog you plan on getting.

We always say, once they are both housebroken, 2 dogs are not more work than 1 dog! because when you feed one you feed the other... when you walk one you walk the other. We have two small dogs and it's so much better than when we had just one, because we'd feel guilty for not paying attention to our dog enough... but when there are two, they play together and keep each other company, which is especially important when you can't pay attention to them all day long! After bedtime is what we call "puppytime" and we love taking the entire family to the park.

I can't speak to what it would be like to have two big dogs! But two small dogs who are VERY well disciplined (we're VERY strict with them) and housetrained are really not much more work than one dog, and the benefits definitely outweigh the extra work and money.

We failed at getting a 2nd dog.

We are fabulous (not saying this to brag, but just to hit home we are great dog parents to one) to our one dog. He is working his way to competitive agility, did obedience work, is the envy of the neighbours with his front lawn laying and not moving when people go by. We walk him 4x a day, he goes everywhere with us and is an overall awesome dog.

In February after losing a pregnancy in January I really, really pushed DH into a second dog. She was cute, a mutt, and so the wrong fit for us. Two dogs WAS very different for us, and perhaps we didn't give her enough time, but after three weeks decided to find her a new home. Her temperament and personality was totally different than our other dog, and though neither were bad, they just weren't a good fit for each other and he definitely didn't enjoy her company like we thought he would (he is only 2). I think making the rush decision to get her based on cute was clear cut stupid and also didn't help things, had I taken a step back, I would have known her breed combo (or what we thought she was) was not like our guy, and she drove him nuts.

With a LO due in October I am glad we made the tough decision to find her a new home. Between sometimes needing help from family to watch our one dog, asking them to look after two is a lot more (when they already have one) transportation with a LO, dog in a small SUV is going to be tight! Had we made a better decision with the dog, perhaps all of this would be overlooked and "made" to just work. We know we are either breed-specific people or definitely need a certain temperament of dog to fit for us, that was my biggest realization.

I will be happy to get a second dog after we are done having children and getting to experience "puppy" again with a young family

We are a 2 dog household. On my last day of maternity leave, I had a very weak moment and rescued a dog that was on a list to be euthanized. When I got him home I found out that he was not only malnourished but also deaf, and still a puppy (oops, DH is a saint!). It has taken some (actually lots!) adjusting but he is here to stay. There are lots of times though that I hear myself mumbling...I was thinking with my heart and not my brain. They are hard work!

We only have one, but we were contemplating getting a second dog so ours had a playmate, but we held off when getting pregnant. I did not want to worry about training another dog when pregnant! Hopefully our pup will be fine with the baby and they can be each other's playmate.
