A few people I work with are taking the day off. The worst part of being atheist is missing out on all the religious holidays! Actually, that's not true: missing out on holidays is just the worst part of being self-employed... if you take any holiday off, you just make less money.
Do you have Rosh Hashanah off? If not, are things quieter than
usual at the office?

Our current nanny is Jewish and we gave her today off.. so I'm at home with the kidlets. Which reminds me, I also have to find coverage for Yom Kippur, since it's coming up too.

@mrbee: I don't currently work but when I did we never had it off because we were gov. employed and we only took the "american holidays" off which obviously are Christian mainly (some patriotic). Anyways----my Jewish co-workers took the day off just like I took my Islamic holidays off. It was always sucky because I'd come back to work after a holiday and I would have so much to make up and catch up on! It was like I'd have to think twice about taking my holiday off:(

The only two religious holidays we get off here are Easter and Christmas, any others PTO must be used.
I haven't noticed anyone out today, or it being any less busy, but we are in South Florida. Most people here are of latin american descent and Catholic/Christian/Atheist.

We only get Christmas off around here. My last job we used to get Good Friday off... here it's a half day usually. Today is a normal Monday. BLAHHh

Nope. When I worked at TV stations, we could swap our days off with other employees. My Jewish co-workers usually put their names up on the board stating they were available for Christian holidays if we would swap with them for the Jewish holidays. It worked out well. My brother has the same experience being a doctor with his co-workers.

I had to use a day of vacation time so I could observe. That ticks me off every year.

I'm technically Buddhist and there are no holidays for that either!
I worked with one Jewish girl who left at 2 pm every day Friday because of the sunset. It seemed like she was taking advantage of her religion but maybe someone can correct me.

@Andrea: I can see why a super-observant jew would do that (you need time to do all the cooking/preparing and whatnot before the sun goes down, esp since you can't do any of that again til Sunday and need to feed your fam or whatever the whole weekend). I've never known anyone that religious, though!

Yep. Helps to be Jewish and have a Jewish boss. There are only 4 people that work at my law firm so 50% of the staff is out today...and tomorrow!

My sister's school has off today, and I was surprised. I don't remember having off for any Jewish holidays when I was in school.

I work in financial services so we only close for market holidays. But the financial advisor I work for is Jewish, so things are pretty quiet for me today.

We are up and fully running, but we're a hospital so we're never closed. (c: I was in the nurse's lounge a few minutes ago and overheard one of the environmental workers complaining that the school district is off today and "Why should my kid be home today? I'm not Jewish, I don't practice Jewish holidays, the school isn't Jewish..." I wanted to butt in and say, "I bet I wouldn't hear you complaining when your kids are off at Christmas, which Jewish kids don't observe." Pissed me off. I think it's nice that the school district recognizes other religious. Better than the Jewish children having to miss/make up school work!

@eiko2010: oh no, now they call it "winter break" instead of Christmas break so we technically cant complain about it anymore but it's totally Christmas break.

The only "religious" holiday we get off is Christmas, but we have the whole week off and call it "Winter Break". I haven't noticed anyone not here today, but I'm not super observant, nor am I really aware of other's religions. I'm guessing people have to use vacation though for the day off.

No, but I live in an area where there doesn't seem to be a very big Jewish population. I believe we only have two synagogues in our city of 300K plus people.

I'm a SAHM so I don't get any days off. DH took the day off though!
We went to brunch with my in laws, children's services (where LO "walked" down the aisles the entire time), and as soon as she's up from her nap we have an annual party at a family friend's house

Our company doesn't observe rosh hashanah, but we get 10 days off for "winter break" around the holidays! We also don't get days like Martin Luther King Day off, either. Nor is there a large Jewish population

I'm self employed so that definitely makes things easier. Most clients are very understanding of Jewish holidays, although there are certain instances when I have to work due to timing. No complaints from me.
As someone mentioned above, that's wonderful that your company has postings to swap holiday time, makes perfect sense!
