I work with this guy who I talk to a lot on IM on the days I work from home. We talk about our work projects and also talk about sports, food, family, weekend plans, etc. But when I'm in the office and try to talk to him, he barely says more than a word to me!
I just asked him what he thought of the new coach for the Lakers and he mumbled "EH" and looked away.

haha! sooo many facebook friends have spectacular lives and are so outgoing on facebook. then in person they are totally quiet and don't talk. or they're super opinionated on facebook about things but won't 'stand up' for those same ideas in person in a debate or conversation.
i've also noticed the opposite - people who whine and complain about how terrible their lives are, but in person are totally normal and don't mention it?

More so, I see a lot of relationships that are different on FB than in real life. On FB, I know several couples who are gag worthy. They are constantly posting on each other's wall, status updates about how in love they are/how great their partner is, and pictures of them looking all happy and in love. However, in real life, they fight constantly and break up every other week.
It is actually kind of sad.

i'm one of those people! i am a lot more friendly on the phone and online, but i'm shy around people in person until i get to know them well or feel comfortable. i hate it about myself, but it's my introvert personality where i'm super aware of everything i do around people

@rahlyrah: I totally think there is a correlation between how much a couple professes their love for each other on facebook and how unstable their relationship is IRL.

@cranberryapple: haha to my kind! Extremely extroverted people make me nervous bc they usually run their months saying things like "you don't take a lot do you?" To which I want to reply like smart ass "yes I do, around people I like"

In probably more outgoing online just because by virtue of it being online I have more time to comment on everyone's radom stuff.
Most people are about what they "sound" like online (fb/instagram) but its sort of putting their best foot forward. Then I know a few who have outright lied, or insinuated things that are false.

I've known a few people online where when I met them in person we just didn't click the way we did over the internet.

Yes. many many people on FB. My super opinionated religious Aunt for one. She is almost intolerable on FB but in person is totally normal and fun to be around.

I am definitely more lively/outgoing online too. Online I am how I am w/ family & friends because I feel like online takes away the barrier of first meeting people and my need to warm up to people.

I'd say that I'm about the same online/offline. I keep my FB free of a lot of pictures, etc. because of my MIL, so it's not totally representative of me. If anything IG is representative of our life. It's not mushy, but full of accurate moments in our life.
I made a ton of friends on Yelp back in 2007. I've been IRL friends with them for years now. I think that's where I learned to be myself online.
