Typing was a required class in my high school. I took it one year before they switched to computers so I still had to do it on a typewriter. It was horrible!! I had a faulty typewriter (we had assigned seats) and I complained to the teacher but she wouldn't believe me for a while and kept knocking down my score. FINALLY I was able to convince her. Whew. I thought I was going to fail typing and it would not have even been my fault.

Yes, although I sometimes have confusion when switching from my American English keyboard to my husband's German one. The punctuation really messes me up.

Yes. I'm a really fast typer and I never have to look. I didn't take typing in school though. I credit my skills to lots of late night chatting on old school AOL Instant Messanger back in middle school.

Oh yeah. I mostly taught myself way back when. I can't imagine having to hunt and peck with as much typing as I do.

We actually took touch typing in grade school from about 3rd grade on, by high school I didn't need to look, but I agree with @mamamoose, ICQ basically taught me to type as fast as I do now.

@looch: I had the same problem when I moved to the UK. We moved back and can't get our keyboard to stay on American English so I keep having to manually switch every time we restart the computer.

Yes, I hardly ever have to look at the keyboard and DH says I type really fast. When I was in middle school, AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) was the "in thing," so I think I got a lot of practice that way haha. That and we had to take a typing class in high school.

@Andrea: Haha don't feel old! I'm just one of the super young ones on HB (I'm 22). Now kids are texting/facebooking in elementary school! I actually have pre-k students who have their own ipad. Not kidding.

Yup I took typing in high school and am so glad I did. I don't know how some of my older coworkers who don't know how to touch type survive!

My mom made me take typing in high school to prepare me for writing my senior term paper. Ever since I've been a fast typer and often get comments from coworkers who hear me typing away. It helped me land some good office temping jobs during my summer college breaks that paid really well!

My Mom was a typing teacher, so...yes.
I had her best friend as my typing teacher in high school, too so that didn't help things, either. I still cheat with numbers, though. I got good at moving my eyes and not my head when I needed to know where those numbers were. My husband calls me a geek for looking at him while I'm typing when he's talking to me.

I took "Keyboarding 1" my freshman year of high school with Mrs. Lumpiez...a super nice younger teacher. I remember all the tests we would take to see how fast & how few errors. I am a decently fast typer & I rarely have to look. Funny that I took it at 14 (10 almost 11 years ago) & they take it now in elementary school.

what's touch type? is that typing without looking? i can, for the most parts. i do sometimes look at the numbers.

@Andrea: Don't worry. When I was in Middle school ( or what I am guessing middle school is - we don't call it that here) the Internet was still a military/education thing and no one had ever heard of it and mobile phones were literally the size of a house brick!

@Andrea: I'm an oldie too. I actually filled out all of my college applications using a typewriter, except for the essays, which I did on the computer. And I can touch type because I took a "keyboarding" class in middle school

@owlmom: I love that I had to use "white out" on my college aps. I think it was the old school Liquid Paper. Maaaaaaaybe I had the kind that comes out in strips. Not totally sure though.

The strips came way later for me, like when I was working.
Gosh, I am OOOOOLLLLDDDDD. Or as I like to think of it, experienced, lol.
