At the beginning of the month, we get a monthly newsletter of what they plan to do with the kids in the 3s. They also write on a whiteboard at the end of each day, so on pick-up we can see what they did that day and have prompts to ask about it.

If I were just to rely on LO, I wouldn't know much at all! He'll say he rode a bike outside or played with trains.

At the beginning of each week we get an email with the focus for each day that week. And then on her sheet at the end of the day there is a section that says "to continue my learning at home ask me about....." And they fill something in.

@Bao: at my daycare at the beginning of the month there is a written newsletter and a calendar. Each week has a specific skill set they're working on. Then each day the specific activity to work on that skill. I think doing everything once a month makes more sense. Weekly seems like a lot of time id rather they spend towards the kids!

We are just starting but it's written on a white board next to the sign in. But I am more concerned with how the teachers are responding to things that come up, rather than there being a heavy teacher directed curriculum.

DS has a weekly folder they send home with all his work. They start this in the 2s class at our preschool. They also send home a weekly newsletter that features a different classroom each week.

We get a daily sheet in her folder with highlights of what the class did for the day. I like it because it gives me a way to discuss school. She brings home little projects she has done in class and to do at home.

ETA: Wow I feel lucky with my daily letters!!!

@Bao: We have the Tadpole system (an app that they use to let us know what they've done every day), and get a daily Tadpole report. Sometimes it's just the skills they worked on that day, and other times it's more detailed with a picture or two.

Lo was in a structured daycare at that age. We received a weekly email with the learning theme and activities for the week. We also received a more broad monthly calendar. I would also talk to the teacher at pick up. I'm not sure if you have that opportunity.

Also in our public 4s program. They have been very focused on routines and expectations for about three weeks.

he only goes twice a week for 2.5 hours so we dont get any detailed report but i wish we did. We do get crafts sent home, he's been there three days already and each day he has brought home a cute craft! Its a play based setting where they follow a general schedule of storytime, play, songs, theme, snack time, outside time. etc.

Yes. My son is 9, and his teacher has a website, sends texts and emails as well as a weekly progress report. I love being kept in the loop on what needs to be done, otherwise my son probably wouldn't tell me.

My DD attends preschool two mornings per week for 3 hrs each time as well. She has a home journal that is meant to be filled out by her key worker at the end of each week, just giving us a snapshot of what she did that week, and is also a place for us to write in what kinds of things we did on the weekend or other exciting things DD may want to talk about. Last week was her first real week of school but I didn't have my part of the home journal filled out so it wasn't filled in by her teacher at the end of the week.

Each child has their own individualised 'curriculum' of sorts - all preschools follow the early years national curriculum but there is no set pattern to it. Our key workers look at each of their students and plan activities according to what they are ready to learn next - eg, E is still using a fist grip with her pencils and crayons, so they're putting out lots of fine motor activities for her to strengthen the muscles in her hand/arm to help her learn the correct grip. As a result, they don't have a specific focus for the entire class each week as with six teachers and 24 kids in a session (max), it varies for each child. So from that perspective, they really can't do a weekly newsletter or anything of the sort...

Also, at the end of each half term (every six weeks), we get a narrative in story form, written by her key worker, complete with pictures, demonstrating what she has learned that half term and what they will be targeting next half term. I'm happy with the level of communication we get - of course I'd love to know the minutiae of what she does during her time there, but I know that's not going to happen!

@mrbee: At Back to School night we talked about this - and we all agreed we wanted a weekly email - so every Friday the teacher sends one out - its great! (DS is also in 1st grade)

DD1 is in school three days a week 8:30-12:30. We get a monthly newsletter.

I have found that it REALLY depends on the teacher. Some years we get daily notes, other years we get practically nothing and getting information out of the kids just seems to get harder as the years pass.
