We put up our tree today because LO was begging to decorate it. So we got everything out and let her put on all the non-breakable ornaments and some candy canes however she wanted. LO2 helped a little too but she had a harder time hanging things up. Let's just say there are a lot of ornaments on the lower part of the tree!

I think I will let him put SOME things wherever he wants but not everything.

The kids get the bottom third. Even if I dictated how things were hung they'd move them on me anyway.

Growing up we just did whatever we wanted!
Mil has a super nice looking tree but DH said he wasn't allowed to help decorate! I'll have a nice tree in 20 years. 🙃

My plan is to have a family tree that we all do together, and for each of us to have our own as well. That way I get my pretty "perfect" tree, and she gets to do what she wants.

Last year E told us where he wanted to put some things, and then I went back when he was asleep and evened things out a bit (because I'm crazy). This year I'm making him a felt tree

Yes, but....sometimes adjusting is necessary. Last year dd put them all in the front bottom half. LOL the tree was leaning just a tad so I had to even out the ornament distribution a bit. 
I save all the breakable stuff for up top.
We don't really care about having a picture perfect tree! None of our ornaments match because they all mean something, we have an ornament from each year we've been together that means something. We also have /plan to get each child an ornament a year that's important to that year of their life. We also have some of his grandmothers old ornaments. and ones he made when he was little that his mother no longer wants. 🙄

Last year, my son kept rearranging, which is fine by me. He was surprisingly opinionated with positioning, I just let him go for it.

Yes, but last year he wouldn't go near the tree. I'm hoping this year he helps. I have to force DH to help. His mom never let them help and if she did then she'd move everything how she wanted. I want ours to be a contribution from everyone which is what I had growing up.
