My doctor has been insisting that I go pee right after we bd. Brief history: we took a couple months off ttc to allow my bladder to heal (my prenatal vitamins contained more vitamin c than my body could handle, and essentially burned the inside of my bladder). Sooo ... she said to be safe, peeing right after sex was essential. I know ALL of the semen isn't going to come out, but I worry that it will decrease my chances of conceiving. Is this a practice that's more common than I think? Did any of you conceive this way?

Yep! Although when I knew I was ovulating I would wait 15-20 minutes before I got up to pee.

Yes. I used to get UTIs relatively often, and I haven't had one since I made this a habit!
However, during my fertile days, I lay down for 10 minutes before getting up to go to the bathroom... I'm in the TWW now, so I'll let you know how it went.

everytime! i heard it helps prevent UTI's.
you can still lie in bed and tilt your pelvis upwards etc for however long you want, but afterwards go pee!

Prior to actively TTC, that was the first thing I did afterwards! Once you've had a UTI, you never want to experience one again, LOL!

I know this sounds kinda gross, but can you put a tampon in briefly after dtd and then go pee? Sometimes I put a tampon in afterwards for an hour or so if I need to go and do something else straight away and don't want semen leaking everywhere!!

I pee every time after because I just have to pee. Didnt know it was suppose to help not get infections

I pee every time.
When we were ttc I would lay on the bed for 10 minutes and then go pee. But yes, after getting off the bed the first thing I do is go straight to the bathroom.

@VEGMAMA: i worried about it at first & sometimes hung out for a few minutes before using the bathroom, but we conceived on a time when I went to pee right away.
@LindsayInNYC: UTIs are the worst! when I'm really mad at someone (like REALLY mad), I'll say "I hope you get a UTI!" It's the worst thing I can think of! -
Yes, always. I heard its to avoid getting a UTI. I did even while we were trying and I had no problem getting pregnant.

My first 3 cycles TTC I got up immediately to pee. This cycle I propped my hips up for 10 minutes before getting out of bed to pee (in the TWW, will see in a few days if this has helped get me KU). I feel yucky if don't pee and kegel it out right away (during non fertile times)...

I have recurrent UTI problems, too, but I haven't had one (knock on wood) since I started using cranberry pills. I just take one each evening and morning for 2-3 days after each time we DTD. Since we started TTC, I've been pushing the limits and lounging in bed up to 30 min. afterwards before going to pee. So far the cranberry pills seem to have me covered.
@illumina: I don't think a tampon would work since it's absorbent and could also change the pH to make it more hostile to sperm. It might be better to wait 10 minutes before peeing, or just pee right away but be careful not to squeeze or wipe too much away!

Yes! Every time! I'm also afraid of getting a UTI, so I would hang out for 15 minutes before going when we were TTC.

Yep, I always would pee after sex. When we were TTC though, I'd wait 15 minutes with my hips elevated before I went to pee.

Like everyone else, I'd wait a few minutes during my fertile window, then go pee. I feel really yucky if I don't.
If getting up and peeing would really prevent pregnancy, the birth control industry wouldn't be what it is

Like others, I always pee immediately after DTD, unless it was my fertile window then I'd wait a bit then go.

@Foodnerd81: Um, that's a very excellent point you make there. Peeing does not equal contraception!
But if not peeing right away might maximize one's chances, then why not?

@mewtill: Ha! Seriously!! I've had one UTI, and now this bladder issue. It's the WORSE! I'm going to start yelling that when people cut me off while driving!

@illumina: @VEGMAMA: Couldn't a tampon just absorb all the sperm though? I mean it's fine if you're just having sex for the fun of it, but idk if that is the best for TTC?
I have heard of people using menstrual cups after BD to keep the sperm near the cervix.

@VEGMAMA: I conceived with peeing immediately after. I am prone to UTIs so it wasn't worth the risk to me to wait. And it turns out, it also wasn't necessary!

I always pee immediately after sex to prevent UTIs but on the cycle I got pregnant I had an IUI and once they squirt the sperm up there, they just tell you to lie flat for 10 mins. I think waiting the 10 mins shouldn't affect your bladder much.

@Vegmama: check out Instead Cups. You could insert that in right away, and then pee.

I know that I conceived the month that I 'stopped trying so hard' - so no more laying there for 20 minutes especially. Had sex, jumped up to pee and tidy up. Done. And I got pregnant, so I honestly don't think it's such an issue.

My friend swore that if my DH waited a minute or so to pull out I'd get pregnant and stuff wouldn't fall out. First cycle I did that (and waited 10 min to get up) I got pregnant. I get horrible UTIs and the 10 minutes never hurt me.
