In our area, we have the option to choose magnet schools which could have your child in a totally different town than you live in, if you win the lottery for that school.
Would you prefer to have your lo in Elementary School closer to home or closer to work? Why?

Home so they can make neighborhood friends, unless the magnet school is a million times better than our local school.

@oliviaoblivia: @.twist.: kids in our area go to so many different schools that if you live in a big neighborhood, you typically will end up going to school with kids near your house! It's crazy. A friend told me the kids in their neighborhood go to 7 different Elementary schools, that he knows about!

Home! There is a charter school that is the next town over, but a lot of the kids that go there are from our town. If we're still living here, I'm going to try and get him in that one (lottery system).
It's the same with daycare- near home is so nice. Less time spent in the car for him, and if I don't have work/school or if I'm sick, I can still take him for the day and it's not inconvenient.

@mediagirl: Are there that many schools in the district or are there no district regulations?! There are MAYBE 2 public schools L could go to and one Catholic school, so he doesn't really have many options.

@.twist.: I just looked at my address and there are 20 schools I could apply to for my lo. Some bus, some are parent provided transportation.

Home because my husband and I work in complete different directions from our house. So having LO closer to home makes it convenient for both of us to get to her, as opposed to just one of us.

We are looking at three magnet schools, one near work, two in town. It's so up in the air right now, lol.

@mediagirl: ok, so I was curious and went and checked and there are 3 designated schools for L. One Elementary, one Middle, and one High School! haha unreal. Not one of them is in walking distance!

Home. So she'll have friends in our neighborhood. We also chose this suburb because of the schools so it wouldn't make sense for us to send her elsewhere.

Home. I WAH so it's all about convenience. When DS starts elementary school next year he will be in a school that attracts kids from all over the city, not just the neighborhood. Luckily, we live just a 15 min walk from the school.

Home. The way our schools are set up, there are certain clusters of schools you can attend. She won't be able to walk to any of them, as the nearest one is just over two miles away.

DH went to a school that was a 45 min commute from his house and it was hard to make close friends because of the distance. He did it to go to a better school, so it was worth it, but if quality of education is not an issue I would not recommend it.
DS's zoned school is a 5 minute walk from our house and I am really excited about being so close. We already know a ton of kids in our neighborhood who will be in his grade. I am really excited for him to grow up with the same group of kids, just like I did!

@oliviaoblivia: Same! There are a lot of people who send their kids to our neighbourhood school because of french immersion and i know i'm going to find it annoying when DD starts school. I have to drive how far for play dates? - no thanks!
I am a big believer in supporting your neighbourhood schools.

@mediagirl: I think we are in the same county so I get the madness. there are three sets of elementary-aged kids on my small, dead-end street and all three go to different elementary schools - and our base school IS a magnet and our neighborhood doesn't usually get reassigned! it's absolutely nuts. my commute is about 30 minutes (west - different county/at a university, you fill in the rest!) so I'd pick close to home, or at least somewhere in between work and home. I think it's more convenient for activities, sick days, etc to be closer to home and I'd rather take the commute than have my kid deal with a long car/bus ride. a friend of mine sends her kid to a magnet school about 30 minutes from their house (not near work or her home, lol) and the kid has to wake up so, so early bc they basically commute during rush hour plus the carpool line takes forever, though not as long as the bus ride would be. no fun for anyone!
(and if I'm totally off base with where I think you live...whoops! not trying to be a creep or anything 
)

Home! Even though the schools are better near my work, I work remotely and this was a key factor in choosing our school! Thankfully we found a good school a few miles from our home.

Home would be better, but we chose a school close to neither. We just chose the best school for her needs and she takes the bus anyway so it's been great.

I teach, so I'd rather her come with me. My school has a lottery/waiting list though, so I might be out of luck!

Home. Then I can do errands or workout after work and not have to worry about having DS with me.
Also, it is convenient when I don't have to work.
