yes, you should turn on your signal when you are approaching a turn to alert other drivers, haha - this way they don't think you're just cutting them off
my DH leaves his turn signal on like an old man...

I turn it on before. But if I'm sitting in traffic, usually I just watch for an opening in the side mirror, then turn the blinker on really quick before changing (like your DH). It annoys me when people sit blocked in traffic with their signal on and there's clearly no way for anyone to let them in.

I was taught in driver's ed (in NYS) that your signal is supposed to flash 3 times before you move over.

DH is pretty similar about the lane changes. In traffic he always gets annoyed because he can't move over, but he never puts his signal on a head of time to let people know he needs to move. Part of it is that he's a weirdo and can't stand the sound of the turn signal, lol.

I always turn it on before!!! I hate it when people either turn it on AS they are switching lane (what's the point at that point, right???) OR don't use it at all!

I signal for quite some time before changing lanes. I do all that defensive driving stuff they teach you in Driver's ed... I worry a lot about killing someone (esp. my passengers!).

Before - I can't stand people who turn it on as they're changing lanes or worse yet, after they get in the lane! My stepmom used to do that and even as a kid I'd have to explain to her the purpose of a signal!

Yes.....Hubby and I have had this discussion many times. Hubby also doesn't check his blind spot until he is in the process of changing lanes.....drives me nuts!

I always do for changing lanes and turns, even when I'm in the designated turn lane. I hate drivers that don't signal and dive into my lane, so I always signal.

I don't normally try to change lanes if I don't have enough room or am too close so I normally don't even bother to signal. But if its in traffic or anyone is sort of near me, then always before, I don't need an excuse from someone not really paying attention to slam into me and say that I didn't signal.
