I don't.
It doesn't really matter, I suppose - I will still get three months unpaid.

I did but it took a lot of work! I was short 50 some hours so my coworkers gave up theirs to help me qualify.

I did, but my employer had "parental leave" for me instead that let me take up to a year unpaid and retain my position. I was pleasantly surprised!

Yes. Luckily my firm offers maternity benefits. Hardly any other firms do so I'm staying put for that reason!

sorry for not being in the know ... but how do you not qualify for it?
honeydew / 7303 posts
Not yet, but I think I will be in June on my 1 year anniversary. I didn't know this though, apparently the top 10% of salaried employees at a company are not eligible. I don't think that will affect me though.

@Raindrop: Your employer has to have over 50 employees to qualify and you have to be there more than part-time for a year. At least that's the simple answer.

@Raindrop: You also have to have worked a certain number of hours. In my state, you have to be employed for a year.

@jedeve: Ah that answer makes sense. I am starting to remember some coworkers that had kids just under a year and half apart had some troubles because of the long leave we can take in CA.

I did but it was all unpaid. I used up any leave time I had left and then they stopped paying me until I got back... I kinda sucked but atleast I got the time off.

@Raindrop: I actually just wrote a paper about this. You have to have been employed by the company for a year and have worked 1250 hours (not including PTO) within the last year. Also companies are not required to pay for the time off though some do.

Isn't FMLA for everyone unpaid? It's just the federal job protection act; it has nothing to do with getting money, I thought.

Yes...I am also entitled to up to two school years off with a position held for me per child.

@HabesBabe: exactly. Has nothing to do with pay - it's unpaid for everyone.

DS doesn't, because his company is too small. But, they're good about him taking time off for the baby. Last year, when we lost S, they gave him 2 weeks off, paid, without dipping into his vacation or sick time. He was planning on taking vacation time, but they were so nice about the situation.
He won't take that much time with this one, and he'll use vacation time for it.

Nope, I did the first time, but not this time. I have decent PTO to cover what I need. I'm happy and lucky to have a good part-time job, so I don't mind not qualifying. Plus I don't really feel like I need all the time I took last time.

I did, and it was unpaid. I could use my PTO to help cover the unpaid portion.

Yep. I'm going to take a few weeks longer with the next one

@jedeve: @yoursilverlining: ok, just making sure since I keep seeing bees specify that it's unpaid. there's so many acronyms when it comes to maternity leave, so I can see how people might get confused!
