I do, just because when I don't... chaos ensues.
Do you read the instructions when you assemble or use products?

It depends. Am I putting together furniture? Yes, I read the instructions. Did I get a new cell phone? No, I just play around with it.

I try to figure out as much as I can on my own before referring to the directions. It's a good challenge.

@mrbee: Congratulations! Could you pass on your enlightened stance to the rest of the menfolk?

I do not. My husband does. He and I have reversed gender roles in some things, this is one of them.

@Mrs. Yoyo: Haha, do women read instructions more often than men?
blogger / pomelo / 5400 posts
@mrbee: That's the perception, anyway. I know if we get something from Ikea, for instance, I have to stop DH half the time from just doing what he "thinks" looks like it would make sense. (Interestingly, this is why he cooks, and I bake. You can get away with deviating from the recipe as a cook ... but not when you bake!)
There's also the old stereotype that men never ask for directions when they're driving, but maybe GPS has rendered that moot.

Yup! If the hubby and I are assembling something together, I'm the instructions and tools reader/giver and the hubby assembles as directed.

@Mrs. Yoyo: I used to assemble IKEA without reading the instructions, but very quickly learned that it's a self-defeating thing to do! And IKEA parts are so shoddy that if you try to take something apart to fix it, it basically falls apart and is useless!
So now I assemble everything very slowly and carefully off of the instructions!

@mrbee: Exactly. Get one of those weird turn-y screw-y thingies in too deep, and you're toast. (Why yes, that is a technical term!)

I do when I'm assembling something. But not usually when I'm just using something (a new camera, the video monitor for the baby, etc).

I always do. I find that it's faster in the long run just to read and follow the directions. Husband never does initially but ends up having to look at it eventually and retrace all the steps.

I don't but husband always does. I know it drives him crazy that I don't!!

Yup! I would rather put together furniture the right way first.

Yep! I have to. And have to read them carefully. I just almost blew my brains out this past weekend because I couldn't get an IKEA hook to stay on the back of our door, until I realized I hadn't installed it right because I rushed through the instructions!
