We decided against it because of the price. We have such a tiny house that LO is just a few steps away at all times. It would be nice to have one so we could see her without disturbing her, but I still don't think it's worth the price for us.

A video monitor was a lifesaver for us. It became even more necessary once our LO got older though.

I got a video monitor for $75 and it was a serious life saver! Best baby item we own!

I don't know how I would live without one! Well, of course most of the people in this world probably do not have one but it is a great invention.

I'm curious to know how many apartment dwellers use baby monitors? We live in a 1300+ sq ft condo and I wasn't planning on using a baby monitor, but I know many of my neighbors use them.

@betsyboop: we live in an 1500sq ft townhouse and we want to have one. For me it's peace of mind, knowing he's breathing. But also he squawks and grunts so much in his sleep that it'd e nice to see whether he's sleep-grunting or waking up.
@artbee: I regret not registering for one now. Didn't think I'd need one, but now we do.

we live in a 1600 sq foot 2 floor apt, so it was a necessity. we can't always hear them!

No... Someone on here posted their idea of using Skype or FaceTime so I've been doing that on occasion. I put my MacBook or iPad in the room DD is in and then watch her on my iPhone Besides the price, i also don't like how video monitor frequencies can be crossed!
GOLD / wonderful coffee bean / 18478 posts
@NYCaliMama: i thought that was a cool idea but that seems inconvenient at night. so that means i wouldn't be able to use whatever device is stuck in the room with DD for 12 hours? lol.

@chopsuey119: What kind did you get??
I really want a video monitor - I would love to be able to just look and see what she's doing instead of opening the door (which usually wakes her up if she's sleeping)

@Andrea: lol yeah, DH is pretty into technology though so we have 3 iPads, a Macbook Pro, 2 iPhones, and 2 PC laptops, so we are never short of devices.. Haha!
GOLD / wonderful coffee bean / 18478 posts
@NYCaliMama: haha, then it makes sense why you would be willing to give up one of your devices then!!!!

@betsyboop: we live in a pretty small house. Lo's room is right across from ours, and if shes crying you hear from any place in the house. I like to have the audio monitor so I can hear when she wakes up because she doesn't cry and just makes little noises. Its also nice while traveling.

I think the best thing about having the video monitor was being able to monitor whether his crying was true crying or just crying while sleeping. Babies make so much noise at night that it's hard to tell what's real crying and what's not. It was nice to be able to turn on the video device and see what he was doing. Now that he's older, we like to put him down for naps and monitor him to make sure he's not causing any mischief. A video monitor is probably one of the best purchases we made. And I've never had any problems with cross interference.
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
@banana: My LO rarely makes noise in her sleep. Occasionally she'll let out a cry, but if it lasts longer than a couple of seconds we know it's a real cry. But I might be changing my mind when LO is older....

I keep trying to convince myself that I will be okay without it and to use a regular monitor, but you bees are making me think otherwise.
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
@marriedandlovingit: I feel like people did it before us, and people can still do it. If the price comes down a lot before I have my next LO, I would love one. But I just can't justify it right now.

We don't have a video monitor and have never felt the need to get one. We check on my son if he cries for more than a minute or so if he wakes during the night. Sure it is more work to go in and check on him but I'd rather do that than the alternate.

We had an audio monitor and it was more than adequate. We mainly didn't want a video monitor because of the security issues. The idea that someone driving around in our neighbourhood could potentially pick up the images of our LO seriously freaked me out.
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
@BabyBoecksMom: the video monitor looks like a mini tv, but it gets the job done! We've had ours for over a year now!

We don't have one but I wish I did. It would make my life a little bit easier if I knew if she was REALLY crying or if she was crying for attention.
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
@Rubies: You guys should totally get one. We still use ours and you can use it for baby #2!

we werent going to get one since we live in a one bedroom apartment and the baby crib is in our room, but my MIL bought us a motorola video monito anyway since she realized we spent a lot of our time in the living room/dining room & kitchen so we can still keep an eye on our baby, and even though the baby hasnt arrived yet we already love all the features and cant wait to start using it

We love our video monitor, it was a gift but after having used it for the past 4 mos I would definitely buy one if we'd had to. We live in a pretty small ranch style house, and can always hear him cry from pretty much anywhere in the house. I don't mind checking in on him but I don't want to disrupt his sleep to do so, and the video monitor lets us see if he is awake or just fussing in his sleep. He is a fitful sleeper (this is apparently normal, especially for first 6 mos or so, according to the Healthy Sleep Habits book) and if we didn't see his eyes closed on the monitor, there would be many times we would have walked in, disturbed his sleep in the middle of his sleep transitioning, and wouldn't have the awesome sleeper we have now. I think its been invaluable.

@marriedandlovingit: i guess it depends what kind of baby you have. Seems like many of the ladies who say they didn't need one have babies who wake up and cry right away. My LO grunts, squirms and squeaks in his sleep, and they're the Sam noises he makes as when he's waking up. Since he's still little I can go in and see if he's actually awake or not but soon enough he'll hear me so it will be nice to have one.

We had one and sold it. We now use a foscam so we can watch on our laptops or phones. It's also more secure as it has its own IP address. Lastly, it also becomes a home security system, which is multipurpose, as opposed to a baby monitor, video or audio.
Our apartment is all on one floor, so I can always hear what's going on, I don't need to see him to know he's crying.

I think it's helpful, I can see when she's standing in her crib versus just kind of fussing so I go in the room less because we have a video monitor.
But at the same time I don't think it's necessary. Sometimes I don't even turn it on because I can hear her plenty well anywhere in the house.

I love mine. LO will sometimes fuss in the middle of the night or while I'm trying to put him down for a nap or early in the morning, and if I can look and see that he is fussing but lying down, I know he'll get back to sleep, whereas if he is sitting up and playing with stuff, or standing up, I know it's time to go in and get him. It definitely saves me lots of unnecessary trips to his room that would just get him riled up again.

we have both - we have the AngelCare that has audio only, but we also use the BabyTouch video monitor. I can say that I wouldnt be able to function without the video monitor (I use them in conjunction.) Liv will occasionally cry out in her sleep or squeak and chatter, so I can peek to see whats going on. If one of us even peeks our head in the room, she sits up so fast its unreal. Once shes asleep, we cant go into her room unless we're in super ninja stealth mode, so we dont tempt fate.

I think the only reason I will regret not getting one is that now our room is in the basement and going up and down the stairs will be annoying... but ya, I have a regular monitor and that's it.
