You betcha. I love my best girl friend and say it all the time but not to most other friends...

Not casually. I've said it to same gender friends after an emotional conversation or when they are feeling particularly down. It's not something I'd say every time we parted ways though, as I would with my spouse.

Same as @Arden: , but with only one particular friend. And my soon to be ex-SSIL, but I've disowned my stepbrother and consider her my sister as well.

I don't usually say it out loud but among my closest friends we all put it in texts or emails. Usually a little more casually like "love ya or love y'all."

I say it to my close friends regularly, not daily and not once a year, something in between. I'm a believer in saying it because even though my friends may know that I love them, it's always nice to hear someone tell you how they feel.

For a certain couple of friends. Not in the "deep gaze" way like PP said, but also not in a casual "love ya!" valley girl style, either.

One is more like a sister, and my whole family is very much the hug ya/love ya/smother ya type, so she gets that same treatment. My other friend is very religious and truly does love her friends in a sweet, caring way, and since I recognize that as her showing affection, I say it back to her, as well.

I have a few close friends I say it to regularly. I do genuinely love them, not the same type of love I have for my SO though. I probably wouldn't say it to heterosexual male friends because I could see that being confusing regarding what type of love I'm referring to. I am a very affectionate person, I guess saying I love you goes along with that (SO would disagree with that as he still mocks me about my failed attempts to respond appropriately to him saying I love you to me, haha)

I have no friends I say "I love you" to. I don't even say it often to my own family (we're not a very lovey family at all... When I do say "I love you" to one of them, it's just awkward)

The only people I do say it to is my DH and my MIL, FIL and SILs.

Yep! I think we're starting to grow out of it though, because we've all moved away and don't talk as often anymore.

Not really. I think I've said it to my oldest friend who is basically my sister, but more in the context of a fight (like: You're my oldest friend and my sister and I love you but you're pissing me off…. lol). I do try to make an effort to tell my friends I'm grateful for them though. Which feels super awkward to me and I'm not very good at it, but I think it is something I should get better at.
