Just wondering, do you ever plan a vacation during a time school is in session? Is this even allowed? How do you work around it? Do you always wait until school is on break?

We don't vacation during school at all. But my son's school has a year round type of schedule, so he has breaks every 6 weeks. It is highly discouraged to pull kids out when school is in session.

Our school highly discourages it so we haven't done so yet. And it's a language immersion program so we also think it's best that she doesn't miss school since we don't speak the language at home.

We took our 4 year old out of kindergarten for 1 week at the start of term (which was the third week of february here in australia). It wasn't a big deal at all, but I probably would avoid doing it when she starts school. If we took an overseas trip I would do it over the term holidays.

We haven't. The issue is that in public school in my state, you are allowed 10 days per year to be out. If you are out more than that, a letter is sent home and a copy goes to the state recording office. This is done to discourage and keep track of truancy.
The thing is my son was so sick many times this year, and we need all the days just to cover that.

Ugh - this is one of the things I'm least looking forward to worrying about now that DD1 will be starting K next fall! I think while she is still relatively young (mostly K, maybe a bit in 1-2 grade), we might miss a day here or there to extend trips. But mostly we will try to sync up with when she at least has a day or two off.
But we also don't have any local family, and extended family is often the reason for (or included on) our trips. So I don't feel *totally* bad about allowing the kids to see their grandparents for an extra day here or there at the expense of school.

DD is only in preschool so we took her out for a week to go to Hawaii.

One of the many reasons my husband wants to send our kids to private school is because he wants to be able to take them on trips whenever he wants and not have to deal with the 10 day per year issue. The slow times at our jobs don't really sync with the school breaks so it's annoying.

We have yes, and it wasn't a big deal. I was nervous about it and looked up the truancy rules to find missing school is discouraged but nothing would actually happen. LO missed two weeks and it was fine. He didn't really miss anything and now I know for the future we could do it again, although it might get harder as he gets older.

No, because it's discouraged for my husband to take a lot of time that's outside of the university breaks. Lo's school isn't an issue yet, but that will be another issue starting next year as well. It's too bad since break weeks are so often upcharged.

I don't mind her missing preschool, but once she starts Kindergarten we won't be traveling while she's in school (other than maybe a day or two here and there). My co-workers with kids in elementary school say it's discouraged, and I don't want her missing that much school anyways.

I teach middle schoolers, and even at this age we have a lot of kids who are out for vacations. Honestly, it's usually not a huge deal. When it does get frustrating is when we aren't given advanced notice and are expected to get a week's worth of homework together in an hour or two. Usually that work isn't even completed anyway.

@looch: oh no! The sickness continues through kindergarten??! I was hopeful that got out of his system when he started daycare and then preschool!

We are still 1.5 years away from kindergarten. I think depending what the trip is then yes DS can miss school. As long as he's not struggling and behind. You learn so many different things when you travel.

@Mrs. Pen: Yep and in some ways, it is worse! I was shocked to hear from the principal that this year, out of 240 kids, on one day, he had 40 kids out. That's a ton!
I think they don't enforce hand washing as often and they for sure do not disinfect to the level of preschool. Plus, I really think the culprit is communal supplies, although no one wants to admit it.

@looch: Wow! I never thought about the communal supplies!! Maybe I will have to rethink that for next year. At least during flu season. I have noticed when a lot of kids get sick in class it is the kids who directly sit by one another, in clusters. Usually starts with a coughing kid. I had five out the other week.

yes I have
Our school actually gives you 5 family days to use during the school year for trips - they only ask that for grades 3-6 you don't travel during the PSSA's

No- but I'm a teacher and am not allowed to take time for vacation outside of school vacation. From a teacher's perspective, I think it can put unnecessary pressure on some kids.
