Is it possible to find a sitter who will pick kids up from school, watch them after school until you get home (like 2 hours or so) and then watch them on days off, summers, teacher work days, etc? Do people like this exist?

College kid maybe? Or maybe a stay at home mom who has the same schedule as your kid and could watch all the kids together.

@mediagirl: My parents had a sitter like this for us. She was terrible for other reasons, but there are people who do it.

I had friends who did this in college - often two working for the same family each doing a few days per week, so that class schedules, etc. were manageable.

I think it's pretty common around my city to have that sort of help. In some cases, though, it may be a situation where you have a school-day helper, a back-up/off-days helper, and then a summer helper -- not necessarily the same people!

Definitely. I know a girl who has 3 school age kids and she pays a HS kid to meet her at her house, feed her kids breakfast and take them to school for her. Just have to look in the right places!

The after school part, definitely. Very common where I live. Often they work for someone else in the AM though, so they might not be able to watch your kids on days off. That might have to be a different person.

I agree with college kids. Lots of my friends did this in college and nannied for the same family full-time during the summer.
Teacher work days and other days off might be problematic...but if you found a semi-flexible student who could split that time with you, it would at least be better than no coverage at all!

We have a nanny for a couple mornings a week. In the afternoons she takes care of another family's school kids.

Yes! Around here college students do this. However they aren't always available for holidays.

I know a mom who watches kids at her house after school. She picks the kids up and supervises their homework time. She has three kids of her own in elementary. I also have friends who have hire college students to take kids to after school stuff.

Okay, I have a lot of college and HS age kids around my house. I may have to ask around and see if they know any kids looking to do this type of thing.
I used to be a mommy's helper in college. I woke the kids up and got them to the bus stop before heading back to the dorms to get ready for class. We aren't too far from a few colleges so, it may work.

I think it's definitely possible, there are lots of people with part time jobs or are maybe SAHMs or wives looking to make a little extra cash. Especially if you are open to a SAHM who has her own kid at the same time--maybe a mom in your daughter's class, where the two kids get along?
Even a teacher's aide of young teacher at your daughter's school---you will have the teacher in-service days, but teacher's aide generally get to leave immediately after school lets out, so all your days would be covered except those in-service days which you could take off work if you know in advance.
I also had a HS age babysitter last year who had another job picking up someone's kids every day and walking them home and staying with them 1 hour. You'd have to find the right student, but this girl was fabulous and I would totally trust her (or someone like her) to do that every day and on random holidays. And as long as they are in the same district, they will have all the same holidays off. THis girl's mom was a full time nanny in our town, and the girl had completed a babysitting safety and CPR class and was just generally really great.

I did this in college. My classes were generally over by mid-day so I was around to do pick up, drive to activities, etc. Plus I was usually off on school holidays too.

@mediagirl: Yes! Pre-school teachers! I have a friend who is a pre-school teacher so she gets out of work before the big kids do making it easy to pick them up and watch them

@FaithFertility: @Anagram: I do have a SAHM on my street who has a 13 year old. i often wonder if this is something she would be interested in. I was thinking of posing it to her as "do you know anyone who may be interested in this type of help for us?" Even if it was just for after care, I think that would take a huge burden off of us. My daughter is really worried about going somewhere else after her school day is through - her school aftercare is at the Y.
