Do you?

We do! (not that we've stayed in a hotel since our honeymoon but ... we used to! )

Yes. The only time we didn't was when we stayed at an all-inclusive that told us their staff will get in trouble if they accept tips from customers.
@locavore_mama: Name change?

The only time I won't is if we only stay one night. Otherwise, I leave $5/day or so.

Yes. I know housekeeping is paid poorly, and they work hard.
nectarine / 2054 posts
Yes, $5/night. My grandmother does it the best - she leaves $5 each day, in case the housekeeping staff changes from one day to the next! I think that's thoughtful. We usually just leave it at the end.

We do if we leave the room in particularly rough shape. But if all that needs to be done is making the bed? Nope.
pomegranate / 3503 posts
@Beehive: we usually tip at the end of the stay too but tipping each day does makes sense. That is thoughtful!

Always! $5 each morning. I'm surprised so many people don't. My parents always did so that's what I learned.
pear / 1895 posts
I never did, until I started working at a motel. Our housekeepers are severely underpaid and deserve tips! We will definitely be tipping from here on out.

DH usually empties the change from his pockets onto the table so that is usually left for them. There's always a good 5 dollars sitting there.
pomelo / 5789 posts
Always! More if they made up the bed daily, cleaned etc.....less if we kept the DND sign out the whole stay.
pomegranate / 3160 posts
It depends. On fun trips with DH at nicer hotels, yes, absolutely. If I get stuck in a piece of crap hotel for a work trip, not usually.

i'm kinda embarrassed to say that i didn't know about this until recently! my parents never tipped when we stayed at hotels together growing up :).
where do you leave the 5$ and how do you make it obvious that it is for the housekeepers? i want to know for next time!

We do, if we stay a few days and we let them clean our room a few times. We usually put the 'do not disturb' sign up so they usually only have to clean our room on the day we leave. But usually if we stay more than a day, we'll tip $5-10. Oh, if we have a lot of trash, we'll leave more.

@tysonja: I put it on the night stand near the phone or the light. Oh, I use the TV remote to hold it down.
honeydew / 7687 posts
@tysonja: nope, same here. we never stayed in hotels so i'd never heard that until DH & I traveled together in college! We always do.
nectarine / 2217 posts
@bluestriped bee: thanks! that's helpful!
@scg00387: i think my dh didn't stay in a lot of hotels growing up, so he didn't know about this either! haha... he loves tipping at restaurants, though, so i figure he'll be happy to do it at hotels too. now to find an excuse to stay at a hotel..... hmm
pear / 1554 posts
Always... every day we stay, we leave a tip. The amount depends on what country we're in.
clementine / 916 posts
We leave $3 each morning, then $5 the last day bc they have to do more work.. We do it each day bc there are generally different workers each day.
@tysonja: I always leave a short thank you note with the hotel stationary. Ie: "thank you for cleaning our room." Sometimes I get thank you back..
pineapple / 12566 posts
We travel a lot and stay in hotels of all types (3-5 stars). We have never tipped the housekeeper, I've never even heard of this.
pomelo / 5820 posts
It depends. If we are staying more than a night, I usually will. Especially if it is a resort.
pomelo / 5321 posts
We do if we stay for more than a night or two. When we first moved to HI, we stayed at a hotel for over a month. The housekeeper we had took great care of us. We made sure we tipped her before we left!
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@tysonja: I leave a note on the hotel note pad that says something like "housekeeping: thank you". I had heard if it doesn't specifically say its for housekeeping they can't take it.
I usually leave a tip. Sometimes if its just one night and I don't have small bills I don't, though I still should. And I admit there have been a handful if time I totally mean to and forget and I feel really bad then!
