I really don't feel comfortable taking LO in a car without her being in a car seat. But I'm afraid if we're sitting there with a huge carseat cabs will drive right by because they'd be annoyed that they have to wait for us to install it.

No, the only times we took DD in a cab, we just held her. I couldn't figure out what to do with the car seat once we reached our destination (DD was in a convertible seat by then), so we just left the car seat at home.
If you know exactly when/where you'll need transportation, you can always arrange for a private car ahead of time. A lot of private car companies will send a car with a car seat already installed, if requested. We did this twice in NYC (from the airport to the hotel, and from the hotel to Grand Central Station) and it ended up being not much more expensive than a cab.

Is it illegal to ride in a cab without a car seat? I was totally wondering this because we were planning on taking a trip to Florida next year and couldn't figure out how that works!

I always wondered this, being from the midwest cabs aren't used much, but I can't imagine not having my child in a car seat, I would not be comfortable with that!

in brooklyn there are only car services. the cost is comparable to a yellow cab. we always request a car seat -- sometimes they charge a couple bucks more, sometimes they don't. it pays to chat up the cabbie!
we have taken a yellow cab a couple times without a car seat. sometimes you just gotta get home. (it is illegal to ride without a car seat)

I thought it was okay to not use a car seat in a NYC cab! I guess laws have changed? When we were thinking about going to the city, we were going to strap LO to DH in the ergo, and have him belted in.
I wouldn't feel comfortable having LO in a car without a seat belt though. You may just wanna rent a car..

I've only taken car service while in NY. When I didn't have a car seat, I just strapped LO in the ergo. It's not ideal, but I figure it's better than nothing.

I would do what @Mrs. Bee: suggested! Even in Manhattan there are car services as well. Pricing will probably equate cabs and you'll have a car seat.
How are you getting to and from the wedding?

@Honeybee: I didn't even think about what we'd do with the car seat once we got where we were going, oops!
@banana: I heard that it's not illegal, but I guess I'm wrong. Where are you going in Florida?
@jessiejo17: Seriously, especially in NY city where they are crazy drivers!
@Mrs. Bee: Thanks! That will be way less stressfull to know that there's a carseat waiting for me and I won't have to worry about lugging mine around!
@chopsuey119: We're going to rent a car when we go out of the city probably, but no way would we want one in the city. It would be a fortune to park it, and a pain.
@regberadaisy: The wedding is just a couple of blocks from our hotel so we can walk. My sister mentioned that we'll have to take a car from hair and makeup to the wedding venue, but I don't even think LO will be with me then because she'll hang out with DH while the girls are getting all prettied up.

Yes, its illegal to drive a child without a carseat, BUT taxis in NYC are exempt from the carseat law. http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/passenger/faq_pass.shtml#9
However, I always have my kids in carseats in a cab. I'm a native Californian where the laws are super strict and I just can't imagine putting a child in any car without one.
I take cabs all the time with an infant carseat and snap n go and don't get passed up for a ride. It's super easy to install in a cab... You just strap the seatbelt across. The stroller goes in the trunk.
If your baby has outgrown an infant carseat, I'd suggest renting something like the Sit n Stroll or taking the subway. Car services can also provide carseats, but make sure you specify that you need either an infant or toddler one. Many dispatchers are careless about that detail. Some drivers also don't even know how to install one properly. Know that some of these seats are outdated too. Another resource is KidCarNY, but it's pretty pricey... Better than your average car service though.
A good read on the topic http://www.thecarseatlady.com/taxis/using_taxis.html

@NYCaliMama: Thank you so much for all that info! We're planning on getting the cosco scenera because we want a light weight car seat for the plane ride/lugging around.

@artbee: awesome. I've heard that's a good carseat for traveling! Have fun here in NY!

I rode in a shuttle van while on vacation without a car seat for LO and it still haunts me. I thought it was going to be a big tour bus type vehicle and when we got there it was a dinky van. UGH. I hated every second but didn't know what else to do.

@NYCaliMama: oh wow i didn't know they were exempt! good to know!

We almost missed a flight once when we had booked a Super Shuttle to the airport early in the dark hours of the morning, and the van picked up a family before they picked us up, and they spent 45 minutes strapping their baby's carseat in. Don't be that guy, bees.

@artbee: The Cosco scenera is light, but can be difficult to install rearfacing. It is much easier front facing, but I think your LO is under a year, right?
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
@looch: yes she'll be 11 months. Ill make dh practice at home first.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@artbee: It's not the practicing, it is that it can be hard to get the angle right without a towel or pool noodle. It's super easy to attach to the car or airplane seat.
