DH likes homemade fries and chips and I have crappy knife skills. Will this gadget change my life? Do you use your mandoline?

I use it all the time! It makes food so pretty and uniform. I also love my Julienne slicer.

I like Julienne veggies, so I bought one with great intentions...and I never use it. Because I suck.

@Anagram: Same thing with my ice cream maker and hand mixer!

I use my food processor for this, but there are definitely times when I would like a mandolin.

I got one many years ago, for my first wedding. I used it once, sliced my thumb and threw it in the dumpster. I've never missed it since.

I use a mandolin for some things and a chopper (like this: http://www.amazon.com/Progressive-International-GPC-3680-Slice-Chopper/dp/B008GV3GH4/ref=sr_1_16?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1377776544&sr=1-16) for things like french fries and diced onions...

@dandelion: I sliced the top of my finger off with one too - the first time I used it
My SIL swears by hers but just be careful, those babies are sharp!!

Love my mandolin! I don't like using a food processor because I'm too lazy to clean it, the mandolin is so much easier. And it makes things pretty for parties, like slicing tomatoes for sandwiches. I could never do it myself that neatly.

I love mine, and use it for select chores-- slicing onions for onion rings, slicing potatoes for gratin or for fries, slicing veggies to freeze (leeks, celery, etc.), making julienne veggies for garnishing a salad. They are wicked sharp, but I just try to be really careful when I use it, and use the pusher tool when possible. Mine is a De Buyer Swing and I like it lots. I've owned several.

I was thinking I didn't need one because I have a giant food processor, but honestly, it's such a pain to haul out, I would like to invest in one.

I have been wanting one but everyone says they cut themselves and I'm a clutz I have a mini food processor but it only shreds really doesn't to much more than that. I would love pretty veggies for a party!

@looch: I have a food processor, but you will get a much cleaner cut with the mandoline and have more control. Mine lives (sans blades) on the counter.

I should use it more, but I do really love it when I pull it out! I use it for veggies mostly.

Nope, and I never will. My mom used it once without the guard (100% her fault!!) but....completely sliced her finger, she needed stitches and everything. I saw it first hand, and I'm sooo squeamish with blood. So I've been petrified of it ever since!!

I bought a crappy one and it sucks so much, I never use it. It has a few attachments and looked really sturdy, but it isn't. I'm thinking about getting a simple Japanese one.

@autumnlove: I wondered the same thing. Thanks for asking. Uggh, I'm cringing when I read of these finger slicing stories!

@808love: I'm scared! Haha...I'm kinda careless in the kitchen!
pomelo / 5866 posts
@autumnlove: Yes, I'm scared too! And often distracted. Cost/benefit analysis=stick to a knife.

@808love: I'll let you know how it goes....going to order one on Amazon!
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
@FutureMrsMcK: eeeek, I'm going to save for later in my Amazon cart!

@autumnlove: It was my first time using it and I think I was just so cocky with how smooth and pretty everything was, got over-confident and didn't pay the attention I should have. I think it was completely my fault (well, mine and a beautifully sharp blade).
