we have one that we use to reserve hotels, plane tickets, etc. but rarely use it for anything besides travel.

We have one, and we only use it for emergencies or booking something.

We don't have a credit card. We aren't responsible enough to have one and not use it, and feel very passionately about never having credit card debt again

I only have one credit card and I use it. It's useful for buying things online. It's limit is $1000.

I just use one for gap clothes. Haha. I get the rewards and pay it off a few times a year.
eggplant / 11824 posts
No, we only use the one with rewards. The others are just for emergencies/if I canceled them it would hurt out credit score so we leave them open and use like once a quarter.

@autumnlove: I have been taking advantage of that Discover deal this holiday season
I have a few cards that I don't use.. I want to close them out but don't know how it will affect my credit to close them!

Yes, we use all of the ones we have. Not all at the same time, but am comfortable with using debt.

We only have one now that we use for emergencies. We closed all the rest of ours three years ago!

@T-Mom: I still need to get the ball rolling on my Target card!

I only have one credit card and use it for pretty much every purchase and automatic bill payments. I'm to king about getting a second though because my bank is super sensitive about suspicious charges (which I do appreciate) so it gets reissued probably a couple times a year and it's annoying to have to reset all my scheduled payments.

@yoursilverlining: @T-Mom: when we cancelled our credit cards we decided it was worth if it hurt our credit cause we didn't want to have them open. Surprising I've seen no negative effect on my credit score, and have since bought a new house without issue. I don't know if having a mortgage kept the no credit card thing from hurting my score?

I have one with a very high limit that we use for large purchases/flights/etc. We never let our balance go over 30% of the limit on that one. The other small ones are used rarely (just enough to keep them active) and are usually paid off immediately. We really just keep them to increase our credit/debt ratio and establish longevity.

I only have two but I use them both. We have a primary joint VISA that we put almost everything on. We pay it off in full each month, and rack up points. We then each have separate Master Card that we use for buying presents for each other (these are also always paid off in full right away). I seriously never have cash on me. If I need some, I usually steal it from my husband's wallet!

I have too many to use =\. I cycle between the ones with the best rewards. I just signed up for the Discover cash back too so I use that for all my online orders. And then another for gas/groceries. Another that I have my cell phone auto pay on. An amazon card for all those purchases (but not right now cause discover is more rewards). A mileage card for airline purchases... then probably 2 or 3 others that arent being used right now. I should really cancel some...

@yoursilverlining: @T-Mom: our credit score didn't change by canceling our cards (and we cancelled 5 of them) maybe because we left the big one's open? Most of those cards didn't have a huge limit since they were the first cards we had as adults (with insane interest rates).

@Sapphiresun: is it through BofA? I have the same thing happen! On one hand, it's nice to know they're on top of things but I hate having to change all my auto-payments when it happens.
I have two CCs, a MasterCard and an AmEx. The MC has better rewards and a higher limit, so I use it for pretty much all my day-to-day purchases and pay it off each month. The AmEx has a better purchase protection plan so I use it for big things where I want the extra peace of mind. I also get awesome rental car protection for $20 per rental (as opposed to the astronomical per-day rate the rental companies charge) on my AmEx, so I always use it for that. DH and I don't have any joint cards, we both just use the ones we had prior to getting married and we like it that way.

Nope! I have 2 main ones I use for EVERYTHING. Others, I use in rotation just to keep them active. I'm afraid to close them out because it'll affect my credit score.

@runnerd: @HLK208: hmm, interesting. I am worried that it will hurt my credit since one is my longest open card, and without it my history drops from 7+ years to only a few years and also because it would lower my available credit ratio. I pay off my credit card each month, but of course they report a balance to the credit bureau randomly every month; so on paper I utilize a % of my available credit each month. I think I'll probably just leave them open since there are no annual fees, but we'll see. I've had to spend a lot of time/energy rehabbing my credit so I'm protective of anything that might lower the score even a point!

None. I wish we were the type to put all of our expenses on it and pay it in full each month to rack up point, but I cannot be trusted to stay responsible with it. I always end up spending, more than I have cash available to pay it off. It isnt a good tool for me. So i just pay everything in cash/debit card

I have a few cards I signed up for solely for the massive sign up bonus. They sit in a drawer until it will be time to cancel!

@runnerd: That is honestly how I felt until quite recently - I used to be way too irresponsible to deal with one, and I was not willing to go into debt again. For years, though, I've watched my husband's credit score remain 'decent' for this ONE reason. So I caved and got one, set up some bills to auto pay on it, and paid them off in full each month.
After a single month, his score shot up 70 points! I couldn't believe it. I'd really recommend that plan to anyone - even if it's just one bill. I put the card away in a filing cabinet so that I wouldn't be tempted to use it.

@PurplePeony: Nope. Don't think we have Bank of America here. Bank of Montreal in Canada
pomegranate / 3759 posts
I have one that I normally use for purchases greater than 100 bucks. I pay it off every month unless a huge payment had to go on it such as car repairs, house repairs, etc.
nectarine / 2220 posts
@PurplePeony: No worries, I don't think location is even on my profile. And glad to know being so quick to cancel isn't just a crazy Canadian thing! Always at the most inopportune times too. Last one was two days before our baby was born, and we actually had to have cash on hand for all the delivery take out we were eating while we waited for the replacement to come in the mail.

@HLK208: you are right, I will probably be ok closing a few lower limit cards .. Thanks!
