I always use too much olive oil... I am trying to cut down. I just can't bring myself to use one of those sprays though.
Do you use too much oil when you cook?

I am very cautious about how much olive oil I am using, I measure. No shame in that.

Nope, I hardly use any! I think it's because my mom was a dietician and never cooked with much oil!

We use way too much oil and butter. In the new year, we are going to try switching to coconut oil
honeydew / 7504 posts
I probably do, and keep saying I"m going to switch to coconut oil, but it just seems so much easier to dump olive oil from my little thingie (very technical kitchen term) than to scoop out a clump of solid coconut oil. I'll get over it, I'm sure! I like that coconut oil can be used in cooking and baking, whereas I wouldn't use olive oil in baked goods.

Sometimes, but it's always olive or coconut so I don't feel too guilty. You know you can buy a sprayer thing to fill up with your own olive oil, right? You just pump it to spray.

I used to. But I do the paper towel trick. It's not much of a trick - just get a towel using kitchen tongs and soak some up. It's fast and easy and no need to worry about spilled oil on the side of the pan.

I use very little. I measure it.
Even when I use cooking spray I use a very small amount and just spread it out with a spatula (instead of spraying the whole surface). You really don't need a lot for stuff not to stick!

I use lots. We're not afraid of fats in this house though. I tend to use bacon grease or butter most of the time when I cook. I prefer natural animal fats.

Nope, but the hubby does. I have to stay away from the kitchen when he makes my eggs bc I totally stand there wide eyed and a lil disgusted at all the oil he uses.

I don't use a lot of oil to cook, but never measure either!

@looch: @pui:
How does that work... like to make scrambled eggs, would you pour the oil into a measuring spoon first, then dump the spoon's oil onto the pan?
bananas / 9899 posts
@mrbee: Well when I make my eggs I use cooking spray (like a 1/4 a second spray). But for other things, yeah I just pour the oil in to a measuring spoon and then pour it in to the pan/pot.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
Yup, measuring spoon. I measure a lot more than I used to, because I realized I really didn't know what one teaspoon looked like. My liquid measurement perception is very poor!

@pui: @looch: You guys just blew my mind!
I will start to measure my olive oil... thanks!!

we use a lot. Like an above poster said- we are not afraid of fat in our house.
The sweets/ sugar is something we always want to cut back on but it isn't unusual for us to have full fat everything in the fridge.

@mrbee: Haha! The turning point for me was when I started weight watchers. I had to track points and I was wondering why I wasn't losing weight. Well, I had to count in the fact that my egg white omelet was made with olive oil and that squirt of oil was costing me 4 points out of my 26 point daily allotment. I went home and measured out what those 4 points equated to and it was a game changer.
I do agree it is a healthy oil, BUT there is a difference when you are using a teaspoon across an entire recipe vs a teaspoon in one serving.

Most of the time, I measure it, too. Or i'll put a TB in a large ziploc bag, shake up the veggies in it, then put them in the pan. Goes pretty far that way.
I don't believe fat makes you fat, but it can be too much of a good thing, especially if you are trying to lose weight. 1 TB of olive oil doesn't make you more full than 1 tsp
admin / wonderful grape / 20724 posts
@looch: Oh my gosh, 4 points?!?!
I don't even know what a point is, but out of 26 points a day and it sounds like a lot!
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@mrbee: I am dying laughing. It's a lot, when you consider your entire meal should be about 8 points!
admin / wonderful grape / 20724 posts
@looch: A bit off topic, but what should I be cooking my eggs in instead?
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@mrbee: You can use olive oil, it's perfectly acceptable, if you measure! I also like to use canola oil, it has a less distinct flavor than olive oil.
I use a ceramic pan for eggs, you kind of have to treat it carefully so you don't ruin the surface, but they're great pans and you don't have to use a lot of oil.
admin / wonderful grape / 20724 posts
@looch: I think we do have a ceramic pan... I will try using very little oil and see how it goes!! Thanks for saving me all those points!

garlic olive oil is where it's at, guys. Makes delicious eggs

@SugarplumsMom: I use the paper towel for a lot of foods too; it helps me coat the pan evenly and thinly.

@mrbee: I thought of one more thing: HOT pan, COLD oil, food won't stick! I learned that on PBS 100 years ago, and I found it to be true!
admin / wonderful grape / 20724 posts
@looch: Oh I didn't realize the oil had to be cold... I usually wait for the oil to be warmed up!
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@mrbee: nope, i learned this trick from the Frugal Gourmet...tell me you know who this is!

@looch: I do, I absolutely love love loved him!! Was heartbroken when he was sued by 7 people for alleged sexual abuse:

I don't think so…? But I guess "too much" is pretty subjective! I use a nonstick pan for eggs then just use a tiny bit of organic EVOO spray so I would say I definitely don't use too much for that.
If I'm sautéing veggies or something I don't measure but I don't feel like I use a lot. I feel like the times when I have followed recipes and measured out tablespoons I am generally surprised at how big they are. I would say for a pan full of veggies I probably use 1/2-1 tbspn of extra virgin olive oil.
I rarely cook in butter. The exception is I think butter makes a crisper quesadilla. I use probably 1/2 tbspn per quesadilla… which I guess is sort of a lot but when you're eating a plate full of tortilla and cheese it seems a little silly to get stingy with the calories on the butter

@mrbee: @looch: omg I loved that show!!! I had no idea about all those allegations?
I feel like I never use enough. My stuff always sticks to the pan because I didn't add quite enough.
