I had strep last weekend so I really want to wash my comforter...but it's a King and I don't think it'll fit in my washer (standard size)! How do you clean your comforter? Dry cleaner?

Yes! We just have a queen size comforter though, and it's a pretty thin/cheap one. We let our dogs sleep on the bed, so we wash it normally once a week or every other week. Luckily it fits in our washer though!
Can you bring it to a laundry mat?

I used to bring mine to the laundromat, and use the big triple load washer.

I have one that's not as heavy (and queen sized) that I can wash at home. DH takes our heavier one to the dry cleaners
Or you can often use the big industrial size washers at the laundromat and they'll fit.

my queen comforter fits in my washer, my cat used to get sick on it all the time, so it's been washed A LOT. depending on what kind of comforter it is, maybe just take it to a laundromat that offers wash and fold, they have really big washers at the laundromat.

I have brought mine to the dry cleaners before- but the last few times I have just brought it to the laundry mat and used the ginormous machine to wash it. I partially dry it in one of their machines then let it air dry the rest of the way!

We have a King and the comforter is pretty heavy! It fits in our washer just fine, and the washer isn't huge.

I wash my King sized down comforter at home. It just barely fits in the washer though.

My queen-sized comforter will fit in our machine, but it's a tight fit. It's necessary, though...since DH has sworn off using a flat sheet.

Yes, ours fits in our washing machine. When we got a new one, we made sure it would fit our comforter and lots and lots of towels.. Before, we would just take it to the dry cleaner.

@cheert16: that's a good idea...I know this is going to sound bad but I'm kind of a germaphobe so I've never been to a laundromat!
@coopsmama: @Andrea: do you mind me asking how much it is? I ruined my last comforter by putting it in my dryer (it said tumble on low heat so I did but it must have been too big because it burned a hole in it )

@HLK208: Oh bummer. That sounds like something that would happen to me! I believe it was about $25 so not bad at all! I forget exactly but our bill was around $35 that time and that was with 3-4 of DH's work shirts, too.

I can wash our light one at home but need to take the big one outside. I'd only wash them after we use it for the whole season, since we have duvet covers.

I drycleaned ours before it got cold again. It's so much easier to do it that way than attempt washing it at home.

I wash and dry our king size down comforter at home. More than enough room in the machine!

We have a king, and i'm planning on taking it to local laundry mat this weekend for the turbo washing machine. It won't fit in ours.

@HLK208: Eeeek, sorry I don't know, DH took it in. But I don't think it will be too much if you just need it washed (not dry cleaned).

Some we wash at home (bought our washer/dryer specifically to accomodate this), and some we take into the dry cleaner!

I wash my queen size comforter at home fairly often because our dog sleeps with us!

@HLK208: I was the same way (freaked out by the germs) but when I got a quote for our comforter at the dry cleaner and it was $75.00- I decided to suck it up! I just add extra detergent!!

@HLK208: I have done all my laundry exclusively at a laundromat for the past 10 years. I wouldn't worry about the germs!

I don't but we also don't actually sleep with it so there's that. lol we just use a fuzzy blanket layer with a top sheet. The comforter is just decoration. If I ever were to wash it though I would have it dry cleaned

We have a thin quilt for the warmer months - that goes in the washer/dryer. In the winter we use a down comforter and it has a duvet cover on it, so I just wash the duvet regularly (with the sheets) and not the comforter. Is that gross? I figured it's ok because it's never exposed directly. If it got dirty (dog barf, etc) I would definitely have it cleaned.

We use a coverlet and have not washed it ever. 2.5 years. Eww

When we had bulkier comforters, the DH would take it to the laundry mat to have it washed and dried.
We recently picked up some plain comforters from Costco that are alternative down. Thin but warm. They are thin enough that I can put them into our washer and dryer. Best decision so far. I picked up another comforter recently so we can alternate between them.

So I totally jinxed myself with my post yesterday... The dog puked on the comforter last night!

One of many reasons we prefer a duvet! You can remove the duvet cover and put it in the washing machine, no problem. (We got home from a vacation once and our house-sitter had, very nicely, washed our ENTIRE duvet with the cover still on - I guess she thought it was a comforter. We were amazed it went through our front-load high efficiency washer without any disasters).
