Is this a thing? My mom always washed the walls at our annual spring cleaning. I just did it because there's been a bunch of construction at our house and I wanted to make sure all the dust was gone, but I imagine I'll do it at least every couple of years. My husband thinks I'm insane. Do you wash your walls? If so, how often?

No, I don't take a bucket of water and solution and scrub or wash my walls. I will take a cleansing wipe to spot treat a splatter.

I noticed some places were getting gross last year, so I sprayed anywhere that looked like it needed it down with vital oxide. It worked well for removing marks.
I think it's worth doing the bathroom regularly because I have a mold allergy and wan't to make sure nothing is growing. I do the ceiling in the bathroom too. For the rest of the house, I would only do it if I noticed it looked dirty.

i spot treat them. But def dont go around wiping them all. i do the crown molding monthy though.

I wash the bathroom walls annually, but other places only get spot treated. I dust the baseboards regularly.

haha ain't nobody got time for that! If there's a spill that goes up the wall, I'll clean it up, but that's about as good as it gets. Actually, one time when the sun was really bright, I noticed how horrible one was so I did wash that one, that was it though. We had cleaners come through last month and I could totally tell they washed most of them and it looked so much better! I wish I had time to do a good deep cleaning that involved that!

I'm hoping to do it this weekend. I normally wipe the walls with sugar soap wipes when I notice a spot, but since we have been using a humidifiers through winter colds they've got drip marks on them from condensation. I'm going to do a was with hot water and sugar soap and dry off with a towel.

Hahah DH and I were just laughing about a new commercial for a paint that is anti-bacterial for up to 4 years.

I barely clean the wall behind the garbage can that gets visible spills on it.
@periwinklebee: how do you do the bathroom walls and ceiling? I have been thinking maybe we should but don't really know how.

@Foodnerd81: I have a spray bottle of vital oxide from Amazon, I spray it on and let it set a few minutes, and then just wipe it off with a rag. It's a bit expensive, but it's amazing for getting mold and other gunk off (our walls were disgusting when we moved in). It doesn't require scrubbing, it just dissolves stuff. I don't know if it would hurt colors, but it didn't do any harm to our slightly off-white walls.

I would not wash an entire wall unless it was visibly dirty like with food or whatever. However, the girl who's room i took over in college washed the walls with ammonia when she moved out and I thought she was bat shit crazy for it. Not to mention it stunk up the house so bad.

@turquoisemama: that's weird. I just used water with a tiny bit of soap.
@Pumpkin Pie: I tested a patch first. But our house was entirely repainted and I knew what paint, so I was fairly confident it would be fine.
I can't imagine doing it very often, I'll mostly just spot clean from now on, but I was glad to get some of the dust out of the house.

ummmm I guess I'm in the minority, but yes I wash my walls once a year in a big spring clean. and do the bathrooms at least 2x a year. I just use a solution of water, vinegar, and peppermint essential oil. Nothing hardcore, but I spray and wipe from top to bottom. I do baseboards 2-3 times a year with some wood stuff.

I wash them right before painting, and then only if they seem dirty do I spot clean. I try to get the baseboards at least once a year.

There are certain areas what I know get really dirty, like the walls in the stairwell. I wash those.
Other than that, I only spot treat.
I will add that I get bored of paint colors quite easily and we repaint every few years....so that covers up a lot of dust lol

Yes, but not frequently. Growing up, my dad was a heavy smoker, so my mom washed the walls pretty frequently (2-3x a year). Because of that I feel like at least 1x every other year feels necessary to me even though we are not smokers nor do we allow smoking in our house.

I will clean them if they look dirty- I magic eraser when we move furniture or get a black smudge and I scrub the walls in the food prep area in my kitchen about once a month-six weeks or so since they get pretty grubby.

Spot clean when needed and baseboards once a month or so.

I did it once, after we had our hardwood floors resurfaced and there was dust EVERYWHERE. The walls looked light brown from all the wood dust that suck to them.
I can't imagine doing it ever again - it was awful. -
i swifer them... in our old house the walls would get dusty (like the dust on ceiling fans) you couldnt tell unless you looked really close and our bedroom was the worst probably because of the dog sleeping in our bed.

I spot clean but that's about it. There are areas in my house that need a lot more attention than the walls!!

I had a boyfriend that did this, which I never heard of! I just spot treat, but now I'm starting to think it wouldn't be a bad idea to wash the walls to see if it helps all of our allergies.
