I scrub them first, and then put them in the dishwasher. Otherwise, they just don't get clean enough! It's a big time suck though.
Do you wash/rinse your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher?

Nope! And we don't usually have any issues with dishes coming out dirty.

I always rinse... but only scrub them if we ate something sticky.

we rinse or soak them if there's a lot of stuff on it, but sometimes it still comes out dirty, especially things in the top rack, which weren't as dirty to begin with (like water glasses) we've noticed it's related to the brand of dishwasher soap we use--it's worse when we use tabs instead of fluid. and, we have a kind of funky dishwasher since it's part of our rental unit--we're supposed to feel lucky since not all the other apts in our building have them, but it's really not so good!

I rinse everything first. The smell of a dirty dishwasher makes me gag!

I only get the food particles off of them. If they have sauce on them, I leave them be and the dishwasher takes care of business.

Nope. I read it's a waste of time/energy and that it's better to just run the rinse cycle on your dishwasher, which we do when there's a particular need for rinsing.

I wash them pretty well before putting them in. They look pretty clean.
I use the dishwasher as a sanitizer and dryer. I put them in for "short cycle" on "hi heat".

I do a scrape and rinse. I don't let anything go in with any visible particles of food on it because I don't want to clog our dishwasher.

We rarely use the dishwasher, we hand wash all of our dishes and let them dry in the dishwasher. It's more like a drying rack to us.

We basically wash them completely before putting them in the dishwasher. I can never tell if the dishwasher is clean or dirty because everything looks so clean all the time!
My DH is very OCD about the dishwasher.

we rinse but don't scrub unless needed. I soak some stuff like oatmeal bowls before putting them in the dishwasher.

Yep. We rinse. I don't think we *need* to necessarily but as @Mrs. Champagne: said - dirty DW smell makes me want to vomit.

i feel guilty about it, but i usually rinse things. you shouldn't need to & it wastes water, but because there are only two of us eating maybe one meal a day at home, we don't have that many dishes & if we left them unrinsed until the whole dishwasher is full (i only run it full, partial loads are a giant water waste!), it would be a nasty stinky mess!

@Rainbow Sprinkles: We bought this for that reason!

It was pretty handy...

@TurtleDoves: same! we still wash dishes and use dw for sanitation!

@evansjamie: Ditto! I rinse only because it might be a day or two before I run the dishwasher. If I am loading the dishwasher and know that I am going to turn it on right away, I don't rinse.

I always rinse and wash really good. I might as well not even use the dishwasher, sometimes I don't.
pear / 1693 posts
we rinse them or let the dogs do pre-wash ;). If we don't the dishes just don't get clean.
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
We rinse them off. Once my mom unloaded our entire dirty dishwasher because we rinse so well she thought it was clean.

I rinse and scrub. DH always complains that I clean the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher but they don't get clean if I don't!
pineapple / 12234 posts
Yes! I scrub them in hot water and dish soap then they go in the dishwasher for the final rinse.

At our old house we had a high end Bosch. You could throw anything in and it came out sparkling. Now we have a piece of crap ASCO that does nothing for us. The plates must sparkle before going in to the washer. It's only good for sterilizing. We hope to get a new dishwasher soon!

I always rinse since we don't run the dishwasher every day.
