I am so terrible at this, we always have to throw away some stuff.

No, it's my huge pet peeve. We waste produce if we get sick, though. Who wants salad when you're barfing? We threw away a lot after the GI bug hit us last week. I hate hate hate wasting food. I'll blanch it and freeze it to save it

I have gotten really good at this because i HATE wasting food. Meal planning really helps me not be wasteful.

I don't mean to, but it happens sometimes. Much more rare now though.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
Not any more. I used to get really tempted by all the beautiful produce, but now I rely on frozen vegetables during the week and just a few types of fruit.

I try really hard not to. It helps that we eat salad pretty much every night.

Ugh. We didn't used to but the first trimester had us throwing out more than I care to admit. I wasn't cooking and my husband rarely does and we were having our CSA delivered still. I finally put that on hold and we are doing better.
Normally we are pretty good though, we only buy what we can use in the first half of the week and them I grab more as needed or we use frozen.

I try to freeze what I can't use, but I do end up wasting quite a bit
watermelon / 14206 posts
I buy mostly frozen because of this. We would otherwise waste a lot.

Yeah definitely once in a while. DH cooks and he's not the greatest at meal planning. I try to look in the fridge everyday and remind him what we have to use up, but sometimes sudden plan changes to eat out, etc end up putting things to waste!

Not anymore. I used to waste a ton, but since I started doing weekly shops instead of biweekly, it has cut down on our waste a LOT. Plus, I buy more frozen veggies now. Partly to reduce waste, but also because it is a lot faster to heat up a serving of frozen veggies in the microwave for D than it is to roast/steam fresh ones for him.

Yes! We throw away so much produce, it's ridiculous. I wish we could buy just a little bit. We don't need as much as the grocery store sells, there's only two of us!
If I'm going to put veggies in something, I get frozen so that I don't have to waste much, but when I need something fresh I always end up throwing half of it out.

We've gotten much better after using a meal plan. Before that, it was bad.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
I've gotten good at using it all up. I shop for a week at a time.
blogger / honeydew / 7081 posts
We use it all, because we have at least 2 veggies with dinner each night. But I find myself throwing out some cooked veggies, because I make them for K and then she has a bite and is over it.

Even with meal planning, I still end up wasting food. I never know when exactly DH is coming home, so it doesn't help to know whether I should cook a full meal or not. I'm trying to figure it out.

Depends on the week. If I buy a bunch and then we end up not being home over the weekend or I am lazy during the week, then yes. But we are getting much better about using everything we buy.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
We used to - but now I know how much we eat and use so we hardly ever have to throw foot out. It helps when I only shop for produce I have a specific plan for - then it always gets used.

We're usually pretty good about using up our produce, and I don't feel too too guilty when we have to throw some out, because we compost it.
eggplant / 11824 posts
Not usually - but we compost and save veggie scraps (or old veggies) in the freezer for making stock so if sometimes gets wasted, it usually still goes to a good cause. We also eat salad almost every night, which helps!

I never did before getting pregnant, but I've had such terrible vegetable aversion that my normal favorites turn my stomach. I'm really looking forward to getting back to normal in that way!

I've got most of it down, I had to throw away a spaghetti squash that went bad yesterday and I was so mad! Usually the only thing I throw away is lettuce, I'm the only one who eats it and I usually can't get the whole thing done before it goes bad. (I buy romaine and spinach and mix them, but use more spinach than lettuce because I like it more.)

I never waste food because I've learned some tricks to help me. For instance, I have to see what I have in the fridge so I don't forget about it. Sticking something in a drawer is a good way for me to forget about it. I also shop as I need instead of buying all at once.
honeydew / 7916 posts
Not as much anymore with our current fridge...something would have to sit in a drawer for at least 2 months to start getting soggy/moldy/funky.
