@Maysprout: omg i wonder if that is it??? the contacts probably protected my eyes!!!

Weird, I didn't know people's eyes DIDN'T water. I find that if the onions are cold it helps a lot.

@Andrea: I didn't think contacts would protect them but one day I was wearing my glasses instead and I noticed my eyes watering. I've experimented on myself several times now without contacts cause I thought it was a fluke but every time I don't wear contacts my eyes water.

Mine water like crazy. I usually have tears streaming down my face and then I have to make my husband finish. His don't ever water, so he's usually the onion chopper.

If you put a piece of bread in your mouth while chopping they don't water. Old trick my Italian grandmother taught me!

My chef friend told me he holds his breath while chopping and that helps, so that's what I (try to) do!

Only when chopping purple onions. The yellow ones don't bother me.

@Nskillet: no way! how big is this piece of bread? LOL.

I'm the designated onion chopper in our house because I wear contacts and DH doesn't - he's such an onion cry baby.

Ugh, yes. It seems to get worse if my glasses are on, like the onion stuff gets stuck between my glasses and eyeballs.
I tried the candle trick - keep a candle near your onion as you chop and it's supposed to help. Didn't help me.

My eyes didn't use to water, but started to the past year. It was the strangest thing!! I never understood the tears from cutting onions, then one day, I was like omg!! the paaaaain. I also wear contacts.

Nope, not when I have my contacts in! But YES when I'm wearing my glasses!!

@Alivoo01: did you switch to different contacts in the last year?
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
Sometimes! When the onions are super spicy? Usually not though.

@Andrea: @mrsjyw: Weird! Are contacts supposed to keep the burn away? I'm almost always wearing my contacts when I chop onions..
GOLD / wonderful coffee bean / 18478 posts
@chopsuey119:contacts seemed to work for me but I guess not for everyone?

Never knew there were people who don't cry when chopping onions. I have tried a few things and they all don't work. I'll try holding my breath and maybe the bread thing.

Yes all the time! I'll chop chop chop and then turn away and cry. Then chop chop chop again. Repeat. It takes me forever to chop up onions. I hate it!

They don't just water, they sting and burn like crazy! It's always painful for me to chop onions. Cold onions help, but it still hurts. I've tried every trick in the book--slice of bread, candles, gum. I think the slice of bread works the best since it helps to block the fumes that cause the stinging/tears, but like the cold onions, it only helps a bit.

Mine do like crazy! If I remember to put the onion in the freezer for 20ish minutes first then it's fine.
persimmon / 1099 posts
@andrea I usually use the heel of the Italian bread so some is sticking out lol!
GOLD / wonderful coffee bean / 18478 posts
@Nskillet: haha. i guess it is suppose to help block the fumes from traveling up to your eyeballs. LOL.
cantaloupe / 6730 posts
@chopsuey119: Contacts are a barrier between the onion fumes and your eyes, that's why they help keep you from crying. Kind if like wearing goggles.

If I am chopping onions it helps me to light a match, blow it out & then stick it (not the burnt part!) between my front teeth. I usually buy the pre-chopped onions because 2ish years ago I cut my pinky BADLY chopping onions
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
Yes, I had to buy an onion chopper that helps get it done quickly, I have to open all the windows and rinse my eyes out when I'm done. For some reason I always react very badly to onions!
