I work in a cardiac ICU and this is used in certain heart patients quit regularly. They also do it in some neuro and trauma patients. We only use it on adults though.
When the body temp is cooled down the demand for oxygen in vital organs is reduced. The body is able to heal and provide oxygen to the brain and heart instead of focusing on meeting the demands of other organs. One huge side effect is a greatly slowed heart rate (which is one of the reasons they used it on this baby).

@mrspen I know! When I first saw that title I was like omg...but the temp down to 91 degrees...that is amazing!
