Did you like the "nursing" style tops or dresses while you were breastfeeding? Or do you just wear regular tops with easy access-- like a button down or a cami that you can pull down or whatever? Did it matter if you are BFing or pumping? I hear it's hard to wear a dress unless it is specifically designed for BFing (since you pretty much have to get naked to access the good then!) but what about regular tops. Helpful or annoying?

I absolutely hate nursing style tops! I didn't like nursing in public so I would just pull up whatever shirt I was wearing to nurse since we were usually at home.

If I want to wear a regular shirt I just wear a cami/nursing tank underneath-regular shirt goes up and cami goes down. I do have a couple of nursing shirts, but for the most part I just make my other clothes work.

I got 2 nursing tops from Target and HATED them! As soon as you would pull them down/over once they'd get stretched out.
I normally wear tanks & cardi's to nurse in. I love the Tamis from Old Navy and the Liz Lange maternity tanks from Target... I think the Liz Lange are better at not getting stretched out but both tend to keep their shape really well. I'm not a fan of the tank under & pulling up the outer shirt... it takes more time & I just don't prefer it. I have managed to get a couple dress that I can nurse in, one was even a more formal cocktail dress I wore to my SIL wedding! It took over 10 stores to find it though! I have a dress on the way from Target right now that I'm hoping I can nurse in *fingers crossed*.

@runsyellowlites: I have one maternity/nursing shirt from Target-- because I really liked it as a mat shirt, and I like that the v-neck has the extra swatch of fabric to keep cleavage at bay and I don't need to wear a cami. But I'm a little confused to begin with about how people use it for nursing (I guess pull up the "cami" bit and pull down the V neck). And it's pretty thin material so I'm not surprised to hear it stretches out.

@Foodnerd81: That's exactly how you do it. I actually got rid of them b/c I couldn't bring myself to wear them after feeling like I looked like a slob with the bust area of my shirt being saggy! ugh

I wear a tank under all my shirts and pull the top shirt up. I don't like nursing tops.

I bought my nursing tops from Milkstars and Japanese Weekend and really liked them. I guess I'm in the minority though.

I usually do a cami to pull down under a shirt I pull up (or a button-down that I unbutton from the bottom). I will say, however, that I have two nursing tops from the Gap that have come in super-handy for situations where I know there will be lots of public nursing sessions (e.g. flying with my LO). I find it easier to be discreet in them.
ETA: I love the Glamourmom tanks and my Gap shirts (which run big, btw), but I HATE those Target ones too.

Thanks for all the info. I was wondering if i should be looking for nursing/maternity things as I buy summer stuff, but maybe it's not really worth it.

I've been wondering this too!! How does using a regular vest top (I think you call them tanks?) work? Do you just pull it down and flop a boob out?!! In public?? Oh, the horror!!!!

@mrsmenow: For Japanese Weekend, look at the 'during & after' line because those are intended to transition to nursing clothes after.

I wear Bravado nursing tanks every day. I usually take off the shirt or cardigan I wear on top of it and snap down the Bravado.

I used to wear a stretchy cami under all my regular shirts so I didn't expose my stomach when nursing or pumping. I wore regular dresses with wraps or buttons for easy access. I never bought regular nursing clothes, only nursing tanks for sleeping in and wearing around the house.

@mrs. tictactoe: Oh yeah, i should have said I definitely plan on getting some nursing tanks for around the house and really hot days (due at the end of July). I'm pretty sure at the point I'll be letting whatever hang out necessary (which is why I only want my mom staying with us at first!)

I like them at home. I have 4 nursing tank tops from target that I'm contstantly wearing. I have a few nursing "tops" from Old Navy that are really just tank tops that are a little more loose that I like to wear to bed. Otherwise, I just do the lift the shirt move. It is kind of nice to have a nursing tank on underneath if nursing in public - then when you lift the shirt you still have your belly covered with the tank.

I thought I'd be all about nursing tops but turns out LO is way too nosy to nurse in public and my regular shirts work fine. I use Homemade undercover mama tanks with nursing bras and a regular shirt that I pull up.

@Cherrybee: Basically, only P's head is generally covering the exposure of my boob. Figure it's about the same exposure I see in a restaurant on a Friday evening before the young women of my generation head out to the club/bar... or in some cases a Sunday morning at church.

@Cherrybee: lol, yes a strappy vest top is called a tank in NA - confused the heck out of me at first! I wear a lot of them and just pull it down and pop boob out. I got over the horror pretty quickly because it's so, so easy.

I had a couple of specific nursing tops, but I rarely wore them. I use lots of button down shirts or henleys that I can unbutton far enough to nurse. If I wear a lift-up sweater or shirt and it's not too hot, I wear tanks.

I live in my nursing tanks ... I need stomach coverage while nursing (and they hold in the post baby flab nicely) and I wear regular shirts that I can lift up over top.
I really miss wearing dresses. Like, more than I should since I hardly ever wore them before. -
I bought a couple of nursing tops and a nursing dress for when I want something easy when I'm not sure of the situation...and for church it's nice to have a dress to wear once in a while!

I have four nursing tanks in total and I've worn a nursing tank every day since DS was born! He's 9.5 months old now, and since we are continuing with breastfeeding for awhile, I see myself wearing them for much longer. *Sigh* They're not pretty, but they get the job done.
