So I never had pets growing up, and I just have no interest in pets. I don't really like to pet them (get fur and slobber on myself) or have them in my house/around my stuff. Almost all my friends have animals and most seem to think it's kind of "mean" that I don't get all lovey-crazy over animals. Am I the only one??

I didn't grow up with pets either because my dads allergic. But my husband had a dog so he's now mine too, and I fell in love quick. A lot of people don't love him though. Hes the sweetest most loving dog ever, bit hes a licker and like you said, not everyone wants to be slobbered on. Personally, I love his kisses!

I used to LOVE LOVE LOVE dogs before I had my baby.
Now I don't love them so much. I do still love my cream pomeranian though. -
I don't love them either because I didn't grow up with pets. Plus I am allergic!

I'm not crazy about pets, I like some dogs and cats but I dont go gaga over them. I dont understand when people's lives revolve around their pets. The only "pet " I can ever see myself getting is a fish tank.

I don't like indoor pets at all. We've agreed to never have them. Outdoor ones though, I like.

You are not the only one! It drives me crazy when people coddle their animals/turn them into furbabies. Especially dogs. They're stinky, expensive, and most of them are practically useless or poorly trained.
I wouldn't mind having a cat, but I do really enjoy being pet-free.

@chopsuey119: I also find that I'm way less excited about dogs now that I have a kid. (I used to LOVE LOVE LOVE all of them, and now I just LOVE some and am pleasantly indifferent towards the rest...)

I don't love other people's pets as much as I love mind. Sometimes I found other people's dogs who lick me and jump on me annoying, even though my dog does these things too! haha it's horrible, but it's true.

we got a puppy a few months before we found out we were pregnant, now that the baby its hard to give her much attention and DD is scared of her.

I love cats but am not a dog person, which apparently makes me completely evil to two-thirds of the world. Dogs are just too much work. And they smell

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one. I just feel so guilty sometimes when people act like I'm not human since I don't want to cuddle/fawn with animals. I've been doing some pet sitting this week so I think that got me thinking about it more than usual....especially since I'm going to have to start saying no to pet sitting, I just don't think I can handle it anymore.

I grew up with outside pets, but I couldn't imagine one inside. Hair everywhere. Having outside dogs in the city seems mean to me, and DH is allergic to cats. I have fish that keep dying on me though. But they are almost more of a science experiment than a pet. How long can I keep them alive....

Often times I think owning your own pet changes the way you think about pets in general. Before I had a dog, I didn't like other people's pets but now I understand why owners love their pets so much. And I think the love you have for your own pet doesn't need to be shared by other people. I certainly don't love all pets I meet, but I love mine!
I also think it's unfair for people to generalize and say that dogs smell, are spoiled, etc. Not all dogs fit that description - it's on the owners to take care of their pets and properly train them. It would be like someone saying children are dirty little spoiled brats! It's not nice and not always true...

I am obsessed with any/all animals, but I don't expect everyone on the planet to feel that way. You are totally entitled to not be a pet person, with no judgment from anyone else!

I have to admit, I don't really like my dog. I've had a number of conversations with DH about finding another home for him, but DH just won't hear of it. So I'll just have to tolerate the hair shedding, the jumping on our guests, pulling of the leash, and whining.
I don't think you're wrong not to fawn over other people's pets. They chose to have pets, you chose not to. Simple.

I love dogs and have always owned one my whole life, until I got married and I moved out of my parent's home. My DH never had a pet in his life so he's not fond of them. I would love to have a family dog in the future, but definitely not right now.

Me too. I don't want something in my house making it dirty and I have to clean up poop and stuff. I already have enough to clean. And I HATE when people compare animals to humans. *eyeroll*

I wasn't comparing animals to humans, I was saying that everyone has the freedom to make their own choices (i.e. choosing to be pet owners vs. choosing not to be), and they don't need others passing judgment on those choices.
Yes, I have a dog but at the moment, my home is immaculate. I don't know if I'll be able to say that once my LO arrives.

I do have a child. A child making a house messy is different than an animal making it dirty.

@Betsyboop - I don't think it's fair to generalize all animals one way or another, but I will say I have seen very few dogs that I think are actually trained like I would think an animal should be. The ones I'm around run the house - so they jump on people/furniture/beds, tug on leashes... And whine when that behavior isn't allowed. And there's definetly a difference in the owners, some houses stink and are covered in fur. Some are pretty clean. But to me, no matter how hard you clean up, there's going to be some hair, and animals do smell different than humans. And I never want to pick up poop. Which pet owners kind of laugh since I want kids (pregnant now), but to me it's completely different to clean up a baby's mess.

I used to love animals as a kid, but then I grew up and realized it is hard keeping a house clean...and it is hard work being a responsible pet owner...so I guess I don't love animals enough to put in the time/energy/effort. I am VERY happy not having any pets and am just dreading the day when LO is old enough to start asking for a pet
