We don't plan on giving G juice except as an occasional treat. Am I missing something? Should kids have juice regularly?

I have no plans to give juice until DS is much older. Maybe as a treat here and there.

P is 18mth & still has never had juice, not that I can recall anyways.

we've only given (super diluted) juice when lo was constipated. juice is not a necessary part of anyone's diet.

My son is almost 28 months and hasn't had juice -- just milk and water.

We don't give LO juice on a regular basis. She had some when MIL watched her overnight (when baby 2 was born) and last week at a birthday party.

Nope, only when he's sick. Our pediatrician recommended not to give it often, if ever.

We're not, at least no time soon, and when we do it'll be super diluted. Our pedi told us we could start at 12 months, but that it would be great if we never gave it to him, and just gave him the whole fruit instead.

DD usually drinks water or milk, but she gets smoothies, OJ (fresh squeezed and store bought). I don't think it's a big deal to give it to her occasionally.

LO is 14mos and we've never given him juice. He drinks milk and water just fine, so why would we add anything to it. I have several nieces who have had juice from early on and now they won't drink anything that isn't flavored with something (chocolate milk, juice, soda). I am hoping to avoid that with our LO.

We only give juice for constipation and it's super diluted when we do. DS is 2 and gets water or milk.

E is 17 months and has never had juice. If he doesn't know what he's missing, I'm not going to tell him! He only drinks milk and water.

My son was 2 before he had any juice and then it was only apple, watered down. He'll drink a bit here and there, I mostly reserve it for when he's sick and refusing water and food.

I don't believe in it as a regular thing at all. There is no need for it, for sure. We drink it as a treat from time to time, or at restaurants.

S is 12 months and has only ever had juice when he was constipated. Only milk and water, and he loooooves water.
pear / 1992 posts
No plans for juice here. Occasionally watered-down as a treat if we are out or at a party, but not regularly and not at home.
Agree with others - empty calories and I've seen kids who get juice all the time start to reject plain water. LO already loves water and I don't want to mess with that.
I was also told not to drink juice during my pregnancy and that has spilled over into how I view it for LO now.

My LO is 16 months old, and no juice yet. I don't want her to know what she's missing, so we just haven't introduced her to it yet and probably never really will. We expect she'll experience it soon enough, like when she's in school and sees that other kids have it, so no need to rush the process!

I gave her EXTREMELY watered down juice once or twice when I was trying to convince her that sippy cups and water were not the devil. Don't plan to give it to her again any time soon.

No juice! She has never had constipation issues or any problems that would make it necessary. Milk and water only in our house.

I guess I'm a little confused as to what is wrong with juice? I know the really sugary, 2% fruit in it juice is not good, but what about fresh squeezed right from the fruit, juice?

I've never given dd juice, only a sip once or twice when we were out to brunch. It's better to just eat fruit then have juice. I prefer to have her drink lots of water.

@NovBaby1112: The issue with juice is that you're getting all of the sugar of fruit, without the stomach filling bulk. If you were to sit down and eat a few oranges, you'd probably be full, and you wouldn't need any more food. But if you drank the equivalent amount of juice, you'd have eaten all the same sugar, but you'd still be hungry.

We don't drink juice as a habit. LO has had diluted prune or apple juice when she had a horrible bout of constipation, other than that, she only drinks water or milk.
grapefruit / 4400 posts
LO is 15 months and no juice yet. She loves water and still drinks her milk from a bottle (need to start having her drink it from a sippy!).
nectarine / 2274 posts
We haven't given LO any juice, we have no plans on it either. He's so happy just getting water that's cold.
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
The only other time we have given it is when we are at the beach or somewhere really hot and we need to make sure she's hydrated. Again, its always diluted way more than 50%.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
We're just giving Xander juice because he's constipated. I hope he works!
pomelo / 5621 posts
I gave him a tiny bit of really diluted apple juice for constipation once. Other than that I do not plan on giving him any juice. Milk and water is good enough. Maybe when he is a couple years old for a treat once in a blue moon but that is it.
grapefruit / 4817 posts
I have no plans for introducing juice, other than when we squeeze the citrus from our backyard trees like we do every winter. And I'll water that down, just so I don't burn his booty since he's not used to it. I don't really see the point in giving him juice regularly, since we don't drink it ourselves.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
Not planning to unless she's really constipated. We *never* drink juice, so it's just one more thing to spend money on and end up wasting. Cuz she isn't going to drink a quart of juice by herself!
cherry / 222 posts
We aren't doing juice. She occasionally gets a bit of pear or prune juice when super constipated, but otherwise, no.
pear / 1718 posts
@merriment: Same as you! Only juice to treat constipation or future ailments...
We may do smoothies or homemade juices in the future- spinach/kale with some fruit- but not the traditional store bought ones.
nectarine / 2886 posts
No plans for juice here either! Although when lo was 10 months, the owner of a restaurant we were at came over and gave lo a small glass of apple juice, and she looooved it!
grapefruit / 4819 posts
I just posted a about this in the treats thread but we do juice every morning. LO is nearly 16 months old and has a small cup of diluted Nudie juice every morning (100% fresh fruit, no additives, preservatives, or added sugar). She eats pretty healthy throughout the day, including lots of real fruit, so I really don't see anything wrong with a bit of juice. Weight and excessive calories are not an issue for her, nor does it fill her stomach to the point where she's not eating enough real food, so I'm comfortable with it.
I also trust Mayo Clinic and if they say it's fine, as well as my common sense saying it's fine, I'm not worried.
