I didnt realize there were so many different types of baby mattresses, I thought choosing a crib was the hardest part but now I see there are so many options with very wide price range.
Which mattress did you get and why?
Also in some crib pictures it looks like some people have two mattresses in their crib, but others seem to only have one mattress. Why is that?

We asked the lady at babies r us which one, she pointed us out to a nice, firm mattress. You don't want something too soft.

We picked an ikea crib, and were advised to stick with ikea mattresses, because they fit better, so we just chose the firmest mattress that ikea had.

Rob Sr.'s high school friend worked at a Babies R Us and gave us a few pointers. With a mattress, it doesn't matter at all what kind, you just want to make sure it fits your crib perfectly so there are no gaps. And test the firmness by pressing the mattress between your hands-- you should not be able to press hard enough to feel the resistance from your other hand at all. We got a foam mattress-- firmest of them all.
Also, he said that Babies R Us loosens the bolts on their cheaper cribs to make them seem more rickety on the sales floors!!! The only thing people really do to test a crib is to shake it... so they'd keep the bolts on the expensive cribs nice and tight, and they'd keep the cheaper cribs loosened.

^ This. At first, I felt bad since I didn't really look around a lot and figured we'd use what came with the crib, but then I realized that it was nice, firm foam and obviously a good fit, so that was that.

A firm mattress was important to us, and a good quality one as we figured thatLO would be using it into toddlerhood. I researched and read lots of reviews and eventually picked one (I can't remember which one it was but will check tomorrow).

i added the Naturepedic No Compromise Organic Cotton Classic Lightweight Dual Firmness Crib Mattress on my registry because it has two sides to it - firm for infant, less firm for toddler. it's supposedly organic....

We just got a moderatly priced one. We narrowed it down to two, then sat on them to see which was less comfy to us, real scientific I know!

We just have a firm chunk of foam, cut to the crib specs. Way cheaper than a crib mattress and fits perfectly!

i didn't do much research at all besides read the "baby bargains" book... we chose the colgate I foam mattress based on the ratings and high reviews. it's really firm!

We went with a Serta at Babies R Us, since they were having a deal when we got our crib. We didn't worry about anything fancy, just went with a standard mattress that fit well for a decent price.
