DS (he's 4.5 months) will 9 out of 10 times wake up during transfer from my arms to his crib. It's like he knows! It's not even a fussy wake. It's a full on wail. So it's a rinse and repeat process (nurse to calm, pop off boob, put back down). However, if I transfer him from my arms to our bed, he stays asleep!! What the... I don't sleep next to him. Just lay him down and move away. Given he doesn't stay asleep for long, but still. Not sure what's the difference! How do you keep your LO asleep during transfer?

Mine hardly ever stay asleep unless they're REALLY out.

@Alivoo01: This is why we had to stop nursing to sleep--it wasn't really working anymore because half the time she'd wake up during the transfer anyways!

@lawbee11: Exactly. More than half the time she would wake up and have a second wind from the little nap she got on my boob or in my arms. That's why we had to do some sleep training. There isn't much more annoying than sitting in a dark quiet room for an extra 20 minutes while everyone else is hanging out without you, only for her to still wake up when you ever so carefully put her down!

At bedtime we can transfer easily, the trick seems to be to scoop her up without touching her neck or head... at least this is what Dh tells me. He has to do the transfer because I cannot do it without her waking. I think I take too long as well! During the day for naps, it's not possible to transfer, so we have to make sure she falls asleep where we want to leave her!

She stays asleep but it started around 4 months.

We have never put him down while asleep before. We always put him down once he starts to look a little drowsy, or when we know it's his bedtime. He'll always roll around a little or fuss a bit, but he actually seems to like being in his crib and eventually falls asleep.

Mine never slept through transfer, so I stopped TRYING to transfer without waking. I figure now it's better to put them down in the "drowsy but awake" spot. But what usually happens is that LO falls asleep while eating (we have to do this because she has eating issues and doesn't really eat while awake), but then I sit her up and burp her pretty aggressively and she'll open her eyes a bit.
Then I put her down in the crib and leave and she generally falls asleep on her own. I mean, she's mostly asleep as I lay her down, but I don't try to sneak her in there or do it softly, I just lay her down and go.
But falling asleep has never been tooo much of a problem for us. It's the staying asleep that we need to work on.

Mine did once, when she was maybe 2 weeks old, and then a few times in the middle of the night when we were trying to get her to sleep in the co-sleeper at around 6 months old.
Seriously. No matter how long I wait, it never works. It was part of why we did some sleep training to get her to put herself to sleep. It was either that or I had to lie down and nurse her to sleep on our bed- and then that stopped working too!

i could never get my baby to fall asleep in my arms, not even drowsy...it pushed me to CIO on the earlier side. i was at my wit's end.

@lawbee11: If you don't nurse to calm/sleep, what do you do instead? Boobing him is my crutch because it's the only sure way to calm him down instantly.

Nope. This is why I end up driving in circles if she falls asleep in the car.

@oliviaoblivia: It's hit or miss with DS staying asleep in his car seat if we stop the car. Sometimes, the moment we turn the car off his eyes are WIDE open...

I am somehow blessed with a kid who will transfer (from arms, from carseat, etc)...I consider it to be pure luck!

Hell to the no! It drove me nuts to see all my friends' babies sleeping peacefully no matter how they were moved. Not mine! The slightest little twitch would wake her up.

I just started putting LO down awake for her naps this week and it's working really well for her morning and midday nap. I nurse til drowsy and then put her down, kiss, shush, pat and walk away. She will fuss briefly but is asleep within a few minutes. Her evening nap and for bedtime I still nurse to sleep. She will sleep through the transfer during those times but if I try to put her down awake she will just wail. But for the transfer I have to follow a bit of a routine I've developed. When I put her down asleep I first unlatch her while sitting and make sure she is actually asleep, then I stand up slowly and rock her while I count to 100
Then I have to switch my arm position slowly so a hand is under her head so when I transfer her she's not all tangled up in my arms if you know what I mean. Otherwise when I pull away it wakes her up. It's a bit of a process but works. I have to do everything slowly and carefully. My goal is to be able to put her down awake for all naps and bedtime by the new year.

Mine would scream every time. Eventually I gave up and started the putting him drowsy but awake. He'd wail for a minute, then his soother would catch his eye (we have one of the light-up aquarium-like ones that play soft music or bubble noises) and he just bats and coos at it until he falls asleep. It took some crying to get there, which killed me, but I'd do intervals and go in and comfort him and it only took a few nights before he was totally fine with being put in his crib. Now at 6 months he gets excited when I put him in there, he smiles big and turns on the soother himself.

@Alivoo01: I nurse before naps and nighttime sleep because she is way too distracted unless she nurses while sleepy. But I rub her cheek/sing softly to her while she's nursing so that she doesn't fall asleep. Once she's done eating and just nursing for comfort I'll unlatch her after a few minutes. For naps I stand next to her crib and sing the same two songs every time. Then I'll put her down and rub her belly and say "night night, M." For bedtime I nurse her then DH rocks her and reads her a story then he puts her down. I think the routine has helped her know it's time to sleep so she usually isn't upset when we put her down.
