We used to have a bit of a woodland/rustic theme, but so many people buy us ornaments that its gotten a lot more eclectic in the past couple of years. I always debate just putting out the ones that fit the old theme, though, just because I like when it all goes together. Does your tree have a theme? Do you change themes each year?

Our ornaments are a hodge podge of stuff we've been collecting for years. It's so much fun to open our boxes and reminisce.

Nope! Our tree is full of ornaments DH's grandfather made. We even have the old-fashioned metal candleholders with candles that are meant to be lit (which we never do!) I guess our theme is old-fashioned!

Our theme this year is, "Don't Kill the Toddler." We don't really do a theme; just a fun hodge-podge of stuff. But we are nixing all glass and breakable ornaments for a felt/wood only tree this year, and picking a small tree that isn't so scary if tipped. We already have suitable ornaments, so that's nice (though some favorites will be in storage). We live with a small wild woman!

I stick to a color scheme, Red, Green, & Gold. My mom has a fruit and bird theme.

Mine is woodland too! I call it "woodland friends", lol. Lots of ornaments of forest creatures that I bought from a natural history museum.

Haha I was going to ask this question today! I have done a white and silver snow themed tree and a red and green tree. Then a couple of years ago I did a tree with red plaid bows. But we got a new bigger tree so unless I want to buy enough decorations for a whole new theme, it will just be a big hodgepodge!
In the future I hope to have two trees.. One themed and one everything hodgepodge.

Haha, similar to @Mrs. Twine our theme would have to be "keep breakable things away from the cats." Anything delicate or fragile is at the top and the bottom has all the hardy ornaments. Poor stuffed Charlie Brown and Snoopy always get ripped down and become cat toys

Ours is unintentionally becoming a bit bird themed, as I tend to want to buy every bird ornament I see since we call Vi "our little Wren (her middle name) bird" and bird things remind me of her and make me smile.

Our tree has always been eclectic, but I usually apply a theme to household decor. This year, I'm attempting to do ice skates, but I'm having a tough time finding anything.

My parents collected tons of ornaments for me, but DH doesn't have any.
We are slowly collecting ornaments that represent us.

@Crystal: Same here. We made an ornament each year for the family growing up, and my mom kept a set of three for herself, me, and my sister, as well as buying one that represented us, so I had 25 years X2 worth of ornaments coming into the relationship. DH and I now buy them as we go that represent "us' more, but definitely still predominantly me on there.
No colour scheme or theme.

@Mrs. Twine: Yes- this! My husband was disappointed that I only pulled out half of our ornaments this year (less breakable stuff), but since he's seen the un-decorating "assistance" we've been getting the past week and a half, he's ok with it now.

We change the theme colors every few years or so and keep our family/old ornaments up every time. This year we're re-using our blue and silver theme, so the tree bulbs, skirt, garland, etc are all in those colors, as are the majority of the decorations around the house.
DH has this huuuuge freaking fake ficus tree (that I hate), so maybe he'll get his very own bird-themed ficus Festivus tree and I'll keep getting him new bird ornaments for his 9-foot-tall love. Bah!

just a huge mix of stuff. I have a TON of ornaments from growing up! I asked DH if he wanted to do a theme this year for decorating in general, but he just said "eclectic mix of everything." So basically, our apartment will look like Christmas threw up in it.

I'm glad we're not the only ones who had family hand over childhood ornaments. My MIL gave us practically all of my husbands and that's enough for an entire tree.
@mrbee: Oh yeah. I know quite a few people who literally buy all new ornaments to theme their trees every year.

We both have our ornament we got every Christmas growing up. I still remember who gave me most.
