I hear about "room moms" on here a lot. It seems like it's typically for preschool and pre-K rooms?
If your LO is/was in Kindergarten, was there a "room mom"? What was their job?

There is a teacher and a teachers assistant in each K room. Not sure what room moms are.

We never had them in Preschool or PreK but now in Public school we have them
They meet with the teacher and organize all the parties and events.

I'm a room Mom now for day care. We have two for each room. Basically coordinate who is bringing what for class parties, ie make a sign up sheet and post in the room, and coordinate Teacher Appreciation week activities with the parents, and teacher gifts (bday, Christmas, and teacher appreciation).

I thought they would start around K in public schools. Gather an email list of parents, collect donations, organize events, etc.

I split room mom duties for my son's preschool class. We're responsible for parties and other special programming.

I'm the room mom. I organize holiday activities, manage class funds, play date sheets, parent meet ups, teacher gifts, fundraisers, join different committees, answer parent questions, and attend monthly 4 hour long PTA meetings (at least). It has been a ton of work. I know it's good to do it, but it's so time consuming. It really deters any working parents from doing it so that leaves the same SAHMs to do it year after year.

We didn't have room moms in preschool but did once we entered elementary school. I'm my DD's room mom this year and like @Andrea: said it's a pretty big job. But luckily I have an assistant.

@T-Mom: @Andrea: I think I would really enjoy being a "room mom". But I don't think I can take on the full duties with be a FT WOHP. Hopefully I can share duties with a SAHP!

@regberadaisy: that would be great! All the working parents in our class wouldn't do it.

@Andrea: how did you sign up to be room mom?
GOLD / wonderful coffee bean / 18478 posts
@regberadaisy: The teachers asked us at orientation and it was dead silence, lol. I was a bit unsure since I don't know the language at the school (as you know), but when no one was volunteering I finally did. It's been ... interesting. They're running the PTA meetings in English for the first time ever, for me.

I just found out what a room mom was yesterday when I got email from the teacher about the upcoming Valentine's Day party. Haha I was all ????

@Andrea: @regberadaisy: I signed up to be "assistant" and another mom signed up to be "helper". Well, no one else volunteered, so we both got a "promotion" .. hahah.. But it's ok because it helps me manage my DD's peanut allergy better to be room mom.

Is this just a Kindergarten thing? I see the phrase "room mom" pop up sometimes on HB and I have been confused, is it just for very young kids or does this persist through grade school?
I don't recall anything like that when I was growing up, nor ever having any class social events or activities that would have required a parent needing to organize them.
(I searched on this because I had seen an article at some point bemoaning how schools expect parents these days to attend events in the middle of the schoolday, which is shocking to me, and I'm wondering if "room mom" volunteering is a part of those expectations?)

I don't recall one from last year, but we have one this year. She coordinates parties and teacher gifts.
