DD got her first baby doll on her first Christmas. She was about 10 months old. My mom got it for her, but it is a Corolle doll that she bought at a local toy store (but I know amazon sells them) and it is now her lovey.

my LO got one for her first Christmas also, when she was 11 months. at that time she really mostly liked the pacifier you could put in, that lit up when you got it right. now (9 months later) she is more into dolls as a little mommy. not sure of the brand since it was a gift.

LO was gifted a baby doll for his 2nd birthday with a few toy baby bottles. Hopefully the doll will prepare him for when LO2 arrives next month.
There aren't too many options for boy dolls though.

I bought her her first cabbage patch for Christmas last year. She couldn't care less about it
She also has a few soft baby dolls that fit in a baby stroller.
Our neighbor has a baby talks a lot (is that what it's called??) and the girls fought over the doll so much I went out and bought Chloe one. It's hard and plastic, and she seeps with it. Cannot be comfortable!

My LO LOOOOOOVES Chica on Sprout. My mom let her watch it, and it's really kind of funny how excited she gets watching Chica. I let her watch it usually once a day - because her reactions are so funny (arms in the air like a touchdown for "YAY" when she sees Chica)...So I bought her the Sprout Chica squeaker doll and she LIGHTS up when she sees it....I leave it in her crib and when she wakes up from naps she put Chica's beak in her mouth and gives kisses and I die a little watching it on the monitor:)

Yes we got Little Boy one when I was pregnant with Baby Brother. He was 17 months or so. He still sleeps with it at 27 months. We got it on amazon- cute and it smells good too.
