@Mrs Green Grass: J wheezes when he gets sick. I have heard a nurse call it "cold induced asthma" but he is still too young to be officially diagnosed with asthma. When he does start wheezing, we have a breathing treatment that we give him for immediate relief and another maintenance breathing treatment that should shorten the duration and severity. During Nov/Dec last year he had a couple of instances where he was really straining to breathe and breathing hard (you could see his ribs) and I took him to his ped's after hours care and he got a steroid prescription - prednisone - and that helps a lot too. I still have some left over from the last episode and I give it to him when he gets a cold and I can hear it coming.
I totally think its because he's a preemie. I only got one steroid shot before he was born, but he did okay in the NICU and was never on breathing assistance. I have heard that they usually outgrow the cold induced asthma.
It's scary at first, but we have figured out how to handle and manage it and its much better now.

My LO is wheezing now. She has a small pneumonia. She's 13 months and not a preemie. It's clearly worse when she has a fever. It seems that Tylenol (to keep the fever down) works better than the albuterol + prednisone + inhaled steroid combined.
