Well we will have our ped do it in the hospital not the OB but he uses a local and a tiny bit of sugar water.
ETA this may be a moot point for us since we don't know what we're having

Our rubbed an anesthetic on first to numb the area, and then gave three shots of local anesthesia. I've never heard of a doctor trying to circumcise without anesthesia!

Yes I believe it's fairly common practice to numb the area first

My OB numbs and also dips his pacifier in something really sweet to help with the pain. It still hurts.

@Honeybee:
@Oceanis723: I was under the impression that most didn't numb the area so it really freaked me out!

@chopsuey119: Hmmmm, a couple things jump out at me: 1) the CNN article linked is from 1997, so practices may have changed since then and 2) it doesn't say where the circumcisions were taking place (e.g. hospital versus home versus medical office, etc...). So I wouldn't be too worried about this; it's probably nowhere near the real numbers.

@Oceanis723: numbing is fairly recent for circ. Our generation didn't get numbed.
In our hospital obs perform the procedure & mine was one of the last to start numbing. She only started doing it within the past 10 years.

@chopsuey119: @mrs. bird: I could be wrong. Maybe just in my area it's common. If its not I would definetly find someone who does it otherwise ouch!

They numbed the area, but with something similar to oragel. No needles or anything and gave him sugar water. He didn't cry about it until he peed.
