My son is 3 and still eats the play doh! And he always at least threatens to put everything in his mouth and now that we are potty training wants to touch the poop. Huge tantrums every time that he tries and can't!

My 3.5 year old was a paci addict, and ever since we took them away she replaces that with sucking on her shirt for comfort. But she does it unconsciously. When I remind her to stop, she does. She doesn't actually chew on or eat things that aren't food.

@catlady: this. She might do things without thinking at first but then she definitely keeps doing it to get a reaction. I trust her to not put dangerous things in her mouth at this point so it's better to mostly ignore it (or deal with the tantrum when I take it away completely).

@Cherrybee: from what I have heard of E, I would guess a lot of it is attention seeking to get a rise out of you, not that she has a need to suck on something. C has recently started requesting a pacifier and walking around with it "because I'm a baby!" Mind you this kid never ever took a pacifier despite me trying every brand on the market. So I let her have one specific one and mostly ignore it and she seems to be moving on.

If this were my son, I would start looking at the cause of the issue. My son was extremely mouthy as a baby, but by the age of 3, he had pretty much completely stopped putting anything in his mouth that wasn't supposed to be there.

When you give her playdough, what tools/toys are you giving her with it? Could it be that they are too complicated and she doesn't know what to do with it? I can tell you that my son has been playing with playdough since he was around 2 and he only recently began playing with it "correctly."
