I still have my old NY area code (914)

I've had it since I first got a cell phone in 8th grade and I keep it for one main reason, I don't feel like giving out a new number when all my family/friends have this one memorized.

Not going to lie and say I don't have some sentimental connection to it, I kind of love when someone says "oh you're from NY" when I have to give my number and the subsequent convo it sparks.

Seeing as the Houston area has about 7 area codes, I'm not too nostalgic about holding onto a phone number. But, I like to keep my number in case an old friend doesn't have my new one. (not the best reason, I know)

Mine is only wrong because it's a state over. But, it's a Charlotte code, and I'm not far, even though I'm in SC, so I keep it. It's a pain to change.

I knew a girl who moved from Florida to Charlotte and kept her phone a FL number so that it wasn't long distance for her parents to call her.

@T.H.O.U.: Ha ha, I did not know this! I went to UCF and had a 321 landline, but never knew that's why it was chosen. I think it was newer to the area when I lived there, actually, so I'm suprised I'd never heard that.

I have a NYC area code! I see no reason to change it because it's not like people have to pay long distance to call me. I've had this number since I was 17!

I still have my MD phone number and I have moved to VA and now PA.

It drives my DH crazy but what does it really matter?? In this day and age pretty much everyone has a cell phone and there is no "long distance" on a cell so........

@BananaPancakes: @Mrs. Taco: Yea I guess it was a national competition to see who would get the 321 code but Florida won it. This probably happened in the early 90's?

Growing up in northern NJ we split off as 973 from 201. But they're all so close, as we got cell phones in HS many had 201 and many had 973. I think some even had 908?

I still have my Indiana # - 317 - which I got after a few years in IN with my 973. I live in Orlando (whoop whoop @Mrs. Taco:) and I do kind of want to get a 407 eventually. The frustration is when you give out your #, sometimes I think 317 is misheard, or I've had them pre-type 407 then do 317 as the next 3 #'s then get all messed up. I wouldn't mind the hassle of switching #'s... helps weed people out! Just want to make sure we'll be staying here for a while.

@locavore_mama: I agree, I see no reason to change it since many get free long distance.

I like my number and it's really easy to remember, that's why I keep it. I get a lot of "what's that area code??" comments but aside from that it's not an issue.

My cell phone doesn't (#613 - it's literally 10 minutes away though so easier just to keep it) but if I had a home phone it would match (#819)

I lived in another area code for a few years but didn't change it because I knew I would be moving back to original area code land.

I will say that I'm a teacher and a large number of parents only have phones with different area codes. It makes it challenging because the school phone doesn't make long distance calls and I'm not comfortable using my cell for safety/privacy reasons.

@mrbee: I was told there was a charge for using that feature but perhaps there's not anymore.

no it does not match. i still have my 646 nyc number even though i'm living in the dc area. i'm too lazy to change it. also we're not feeling quite settled here yet so i don't want to make that kind of "commitment". lastly, i am emotionally attached to my time in nyc--it was the longest i've lived anywhere as an adult.

My area code is WI, but I live in CO. I've had the number for at least 10 years so I didn't want to go through the hassle of updating everyone. Plus, my parents didn't have a cell phone other than an emergency pre paid one so having a local number they could call without long distance seemed easier.

Nope, mine where I lived in college. My husband got his there too. Part is laziness that I don't want to have to change something that works fine (it's a local # for most of my family) s is and part is nostalgia- it was our ideal location and favorite place to be
