Yikes! DH told me about this.
"You are born to a mother and a father — or at least that's how it should be," Dolce said. "I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Rented uterus, semen chosen from a catalog."

Don't diss Sir Elton, or you'll regret it!
But really, terrible thing to say
pineapple / 12566 posts
I saw that. How insensitive.
I also thought it was strange since the two of them are gay (Dolce and Gabbana) and used to be a couple. The whole thing about how gay families aren't real families was odd, especially coming from gay guys. Pretty self-hating.

Ugh i think maybe they are confusing beautiful miraculous creation of human life with the clothing they manufacture.

My 'synthetic' child was worth every second spent in a test tube. Bunch of morons.

@lamariniere: I'm confused by it, too. I don't understand why a gay couple would say such a thing.
@MrsMccarthy: Haha!
@jaguar: I agree!!

*newsflash* two morons won't be breeding any time soon! the world rejoices!

@lamariniere: I agree, I thought that was odd too.
I hope more celebs boycott them.

Blahhhhhh
People can have their own opinions, but don't voice them, or if you do think of others....
With that said, THANK GOD they don't believe in IVF so they don't raise a child!
So sad and ignorant
grapefruit / 4703 posts
Yeah, f*ck those guys. They were in Vanity Fair 10 years ago talking about how they wanted a family, so I feel like this is some kind of publicity stunt or something. Not very smart for their 'brand'.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
Wow, what a horrible thing to say!! Good for Elton to boycott them and encourage others to do so!!
honeydew / 7230 posts
@jaguar: 100% agree
I've been following this because I love Elton and I have IVF kids so obviously it's close to my heart. I just don't understand why D&G are saying this. What do they gain from publicizing this opinion? Don't they have Marketing people who tell them not to say things that are bound to offend a whole bunch of people? Anyway, I'm not walking around in designer clothes so it's something of a non-issue for me personally, but I love that other celebrities are taking up the boycott. IVF is an incredible thing that has given so many families a chance to have children. How dare anyone call that unnatural or synthetic?
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
I'd be willing to bet the people who are going to agree with them on this aren't the ones out buying tons of D&G. So it certainly seems like they've bitten the hand that feeds them. Good riddance!
honeydew / 7504 posts
I simply don't understand why people don't THINK before they speak. Or at least consult with their PR people! Good for Elton John, and I hope every other celebrity follows his lead. Put D&G out of business.
nectarine / 2765 posts
@Shutterbug: Amen, f*uck those guys.
I was very disgusted when I read this the other day. If a particular method isn't for you, then don't do it. But to call IVF babies synthetic is disgusting. I hope more people & celebs boycott them.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
I think this is probably some kind of orchestrated comment to make them relevant in the news. Remember the situation a few years ago when John Galliano made some comment about Jewish people, and Natalie Portman (the face of Dior Cherie, where Galliano was the designer) spoke out against him? People love a good grovel and a comeback.
Now, do I agree with what he said? No, but we're talking about them, which I suspect is the reason behind it.
cantaloupe / 6630 posts
Such ignorant, offensive comments. Totally with Elton John on this one.
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
Wow, what idiots. Not that I can afford D&G but if I could I would boycott!
pomegranate / 3272 posts
To be fair, they didn't specifically call out Elton John's kids, he just responded to their statement. While I absolutely don't agree with what they said (who could?), they do have a right to their opinion and to voice it however they choose. But then everyone else has a right to voice their opinion about it and choose not to purchase their clothes. So really, I would say it's a bad business decision.
cantaloupe / 6059 posts
Wow, I hadn't heard of this until now and I'm blown away by how offensive those remarks are.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
Of course they were "taken out of context."
I've been following this story too. My baby is not synthetic. I'm glad Elton John said something.
pomelo / 5257 posts
@Leialou: Ugh, he needs to just stop talking! Now he's calling Elton John "fascist"?? What he originally said was stupid and hateful and now he's just digging himself deeper. It drives me crazy when people throw around terms like "fascist" or "Nazi" to describe people they don't like. It's actually really offensive. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised, coming from this guy!
pear / 1556 posts
I was completely disgusted by this. IVF is the only way DH and I will be able to have children. There is nothing "synthetic" about a child born from IVF.
pear / 1510 posts
Yes, yes, D&G, you have a right to your opinion. Everyone else has a right to judge you for it.
grapefruit / 4455 posts
I hope this doesn't throw the thread totally off topic but these kinds of comments kind of strike a chord with me because in a way they remind me of the nasty formula comments, about "artificially" feeding babies. And it reminds me that if we line all these babies up their first day of kindergarten we will see little human beings. You won't be able to tell at all which kids were conceived via IVF (or formula fed, or at jars of baby food, or did anything else "artificial." Though maybe sometimes you can tell who wasn't given enough love.) Maybe this sounds super cheesy but can't people get past our differences and see that first?
