My LO's are 14 weeks. Naps are SOOOO hard for us...they often just catnap throughout the day. Or DS won't nap at all, and DD will take a 3 hour marathon. It's time to get this under control!
When did your LO's drop from three naps to two?

MY LO is 6 months - still doing 3 naps. He just can't make it to bedtime without that 3rd nap. Currently, he does 1.5 hours in the AM, about an hour in the early afternoon and then 30 min late afternoon. It took him to about 5 months to get this schedule down. He used to be a cat napper too - ALL 30 min naps... it was REALLY frustrating and we tried nap training him, etc but one day, he was just able to do it himself....

Mine didn't drop to 2 naps until 7 months and that's considered early for a lot of people. At 14 weeks she was taking 4 naps, which totalled 5.5 hours.

My son is 9.5 months and still at 3 naps:
6am wake
730am nap - 30-45 mins
11am nap 1-2 hours
4pm nap 30-45 mins
8pm bedtime
He's pretty good about napping in the car whenever if we go out, but if we're home he needs 3 naps or he's soooo grumpy!
I would love to get to 2 naps! Subscribing!

My LO is 9 months and he takes either 3 naps or 2 naps. We haven't planned on dropping the 3rd nap yet, he sometimes just doesn't take it.

our LO dropped his 3rd nap around 8 months. Hang in there! at 14 weeks our nap schedule was juuuussstttttt starting to flesh out and actually be consistent... keep at it and hopefully your LO's and you will figure out a good napping rhythm soon!

@Mrsjets: your LO's midday nap is so deliciously long! so awesome hehe... i'm not sure if it is possible for you guys, but perhaps in order to drop that 3rd nap your LO could go to bed earlier? perhaps sleeping 6-6 or 7-7? some babies just don't sleep as long at night and perhaps that is why your LO has the 3 naps to make up for it? sounds like you guys are making it work, though!

Ok! This is really good info...thank you so much!
I think by two naps, I really mean two long, quality naps. I'm fine with them taking a third catnap in the late afternoon, because I know there's no way they would make it to bedtime without SOMETHING between 4-6pm.
@Freckles: We're probably doing about 4 naps...sometimes 5 if you count the catnap.

closer to 9 months for both kids. 2 long quality naps that were at least one hour, usually longer.

@twoofeverything: we were at 4-5 naps daily at 14 weeks. It drove me crazy, but I don't think I could have done anything different to make it better at that time. I think my LO just needed some time to get to 3 naps a day by himself. Some babies are just better nappers from the start than others!

@Mrs. Bee: That was my next question! What does everyone consider a "quality" nap?
honeydew / 7444 posts
@twoofeverything: yeah, she would have 1 long nap from 1.5-2, maybe 2.5 hours, and then like 3-4 45-60 min naps. I think the reason she took so many naps is because she woke up really early!

I think I read in one of my sleep books that "real" naps need to be at least 1 hour long.

LO is 6 months and she dropped to 2 naps at 5 months old.

@twoofeverything: at least an hour, but at that age they were napping about an hour and a half per nap. sometimes longer if we let them, but we woke them up so bedtime wouldn't be too late.

He dropped his third nap at around 7 months. Now he does one nap for about 1 hour in the AM and another nap for about 1.5 hours in the PM.

for me a quality nap would be at least 1 hr -- right now, since he is taking only 2 naps a day, i always hope that they will be at LEAST 1.5 hrs each

DD is 13 months and wavers between 2-3 naps a day, depending on her morning wake-up time and the length of the naps. On weekdays she usually does two long naps and a cat nap late afternoon to get her through to bedtime (otherwise she doesn't last). On weekends I try to stretch out her awake times so she does 2 naps, in an attempt to get her to do 2 long naps and drop the cat nap.

@tysonja: we've moved bedtime to 7pm and have stretched his wake times. He's had 2 naps a day: one around 10 and one around 3. They're about an hour each but hopefully the get longer as he gets used to it. Thanks for the push to change it up I do have to say I kinda miss the mid day freedom

It has been the week from hell so far, but I have to admit, we've made a lot of progress on their naps.
They are still napping 4-5 times a day, depending on when they wake up for the morning, (today it was 5, because they woke up at 5am and didn't get back to sleep).
Our big progress:
- They now both nap in their crib
- They will now go down (roughly) at the same time
- We have established a nap routine that seems to really cue them that it's time for sleep
- They fuss very little (if at all) when I put them down (as long as they are tired enough)
Unfortunately, both of them are still only napping for 30 -40 minutes at a time...I've tried to do some nap extensions, but they basically just lay there and whimper, waking up the other. Still...progress is progress!

LO is 6 months, wakes up between 630 and 730 every morning, takes a morning, mid day, and afternoon nap, and then a cat nap later (usually.) Her bedtime isn't til 830 but we will be moving it up, we just haven't due to travel. After that she will be down to three naps. It also depends on how long the naps are, they have only recently begun to be over an hour or about an hour (like in the last week.) Prior to that it was 30-45 min usually.
