RJ has always been a fantastic sleeper for me -- he's slept through the night every night since he was 4.5 months old, except for a few nights here and there when he was sick or teething. His sleep schedule is pretty much 7am-7pm. However, every now and then we run into this problem: he poops around 4 or 5am, and wakes up crying. Sometimes if we leave him, he eventually stops crying and goes back to sleep. I'm just too afraid that if we go in to change his diaper and put him back down he will get upset and want to stay up. Sometimes if we leave him, he stays up all morning and it just turns into a super early wakeup. I know the simple answer is for everyone to be sure to go to bed early so that a 5am wakeup isn't so disastrous. But until he's potty trained (I don't think he's ready yet, he's 22 months but doesn't ask for diaper changes or anything yet) how do we avoid this? Some nights we try to prolong bedtime to give him a chance to poop before bed, but I hate to keep him up until 8pm because he just gets so tired and crazy for bedtime.
