Elephant in the room: separating children at the border

If you're in Michigan, here is an article about where some of the children are ending up here. https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2018/06/19/immigrant-children-michigan-foster-care/711174002/

I'm not familiar with Samaritas, but Bethany has some info on their site about how to help: https://www.bethany.org/campaigns/refugee#?step=1

@shabang: wow. I am at a loss for words. I am thankful they seem to care, but do we need to stake out all of our airports to figure out where the hell these kids are going?! my mind just cannot process this.

@NorthStar: I know. It's sick and sad and incredibly upsetting.

Self-care is important too - you can't help others unless you take care of yourself first.

I’m dumbfounded by the jacket, but I don’t want that to distract us from ththe task at hand. There are still thousands of children that were separated by the US govt in 2018 on American soil and have not been reunited with their moms and dads.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I saw a news article today the sec. Nielsen said separations will continue?? I have to look into it more but I already called my senators today to demand her resignation. We cannot accept liars

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Agreed, the jacket is really just too stupid for me to get more worked up than rolling my eyes. I'm already too worked up about these kids! I think it's intended to be a distraction from the real issue. (Don't get me wrong, it's ridiculous, but I'm concerned Trump is trying to deflect).

@gotkimchi what scares me most is that they lie about EVERYTHING, oftentimes saying 2 opposing things in the same breath (we aren't separating kids/well we are because it's the democrats fault) and we know that... so what are they lying about that we DON'T know/aren't hearing about (Yet?)

Also I'll just leave this here.

@lioneyes: This - the LIES and the voracity with which they all LIE over and over again is the total mind-f*ck. I don't believe a single word that comes out of this administration.

Some I know through my activism circles posted this link:
    https://www.theyoungcenter.org/volunteer-at-the-young-center/
They are looking for child advocates for unaccompanied immigrant children in Chicago, Houston, San Antonio, Harlingen, Phoenix, LA, NY and DC.

ETA: I may not be using the word voracity correctly, but I can't think of a better word - it's like they are hungry for the lies!

@lioneyes: I worry about this too and I also wonder what they’re lying about just to hide something worse! Like they’re just trying to distract us from what they’re really trying to hide

My son picked Are You My Mother for his bedtime story and I could barely get through it thinking of all the separated children asking where is my mother. I left his room and cried. I can’t comprehend the evil that it takes to have done this....

Hey, just want to thank the bees for talking about this tragedy. Since the '16 election and all the tragic shootings before and since, it seems like the multi-page tense topics on HB have been fewer (or is just me not always being around HB?). Anyway, back when we were debating candidates there were some tense days. Now it's like we are so way past that point.

Earlier this week, I spent an entire day (i.e. 10 hours) driving in the car for work, hearing the news stories from all over the radio dial. Not being able to google and read for myself, I found it impossible to figure out what the hell the story was: littles were being separated from parents, and-wait! it's always been happening, and Trump blames Congress, and Congress tells Trump to end it and there isn't enough room for immigrants and no plan for reuniting families and holy shit, everyday people are justifying this because immigrants are criminals. WTF. I'm not blaming media - no way. I'm just incensed at how twisted the story is.

Someone at work who is high up created a new completely onerous and asinine procedure this week. He is one of those power-trip people who does an incredibly effective job at minimizing other people's situations. He said something like, "there is nothing new in the [completely new] process than what we should already be doing." I thought I was original, calling it Trump logic, but I quickly found a parody Trump Logic twitter feed. Not surprisingly, the last post on it was 18 months ago when this all stopped being funny.

For those in the nyc area, councilman mark Levine has been organizing donations for the children brought here. I think they’re maxed out on physical stuff but need volunteers to sort and deliver goods still

The latest, most F'ed up update. I did see that there is a need for (Spanish-speaking) volunteers in Texas as well as MI, NY and DC to accompany these kids to court in a non-legal capacity.

There are marches and rlies to end family separation/end family detention this Saturday. Is everyone attending their local march?

I'm heading to the Brooklyn Bridge March-- we need big numbers. It shows we mean business and we are a movement with voting numbers.

Look up and register an event near you at https://www.familiesbelongtogether.org/

@Anagram: yes! LO and I are attending the rally in Atlanta.

The numbers of children still separated from their parents hasn’t changed much since the EO was signed. Reunification is too damn slow. The other day on the news a mom was deported back to Guatemala, but her son was still held here in the US. Makes no sense.

    cantaloupe / 6171 posts

@Anagram: we’ll be in Brooklyn too! I think we’re skipping the march part and showing up straight at Cadman plaza— we’re bringing the girls and the thought of being potentially stuck on the bridge for a real long time is making me anxious...

How/ are you all talking to your kids about this? I tried to explain to my 4yo tonight and she was so upset and scared

@nana87: we went today, but we didn't make it over the bridge! We were in Foley Square for almost 3 hours, and since it was so hot and I had my 2.5 year old with me, we waited until the entire crowd was crossing over the bridge (it took forrrever) and then went home. It was a major bottleneck since the pedestrian portion of the bridge is so narrow right now. It was silk a great rally in the NYC side. How was the Brooklyn side?

  26. nana87

    cantaloupe / 6171 posts

    @Miss Ariel: thanks!

@Anagram: I can’t believe they didn’t close the bridge to traffic! We were on the Brooklyn side from about 11-1:30 and the marchers didn’t even make it to Cadman Plaza before the rally speeches ended. It was really nice with lots of families, and not super crowded so we had a good shady spot and a bench.

HHS is reporting there are around 3,000 children still in custody, separated from their families. And as many as 100 under the age of 5.

  29. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Mama Bird: To comply with a federal judge's orders, the under 5s must be reunited by Tuesday and the rest have to be reunited by July 26th. We'll see if that happens... they are having to resort to DNA tests for at least some of the kids and parents to figure out who belongs to who...

@Adira: That's... good. Better than nothing. I read something yesterday saying a barely 1 year old was not bathed for the 85 days he was detained/separated from his parents and was covered in lice.

I also saw they can’t find the parents for 38 children under age 5. What a horrible nightmare. We must vote everyone out. This is despicable

ETA: and let’s just all remeber outside of the human rights violations which 100% need to be adresssed (I would hope with criminal charges) what a true waste of money and resources. I can’t understand how anyone would be for this

  37. erinbaderin

    pomelo / 5573 posts

@gotkimchi: Yes, and apparently today they argued that they shouldn’t have to reunite the families if the parents (at least 19 with kids under 5) gave already been deported.

  38. gotkimchi

    nectarine / 2400 posts

@erinbaderin: which is ridiculous!!! What do they propose we do with those 19 children? I know they don’t care but it’s straight up insane

  39. Mama Bird

    pomegranate / 3127 posts

@erinbaderin: @gotkimchi: oh? I would love to see the judges that approved deporting them and didn't bother to let them get their kids first, booted off the bench. Like, with actual boots.

I hope someone (or multiple someones) go to jail over this. It's monstrous what we're doing...
