It’s horrifying and I’ve never been so invested in voting these mother fuckers out. And for all these asshole politicians who call themselves Christians I hope god truly judges them
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
Agreed! This Administration is the worst AND the GOP in Congress who are complicit. AND anyone who continues to vote to keep them in charge. This will be a stain on America's history.

It’s barbaric and disgusting. It’s embarassing that our nation’s leaders are so cruel.
grapefruit / 4361 posts
Agreed fully. I feel like there's no empathy at all in the anti-immigrant posture.

I know many of us sometimes feel fatigue about all these atrocities, but we *must* muster everything we have and fight this. Use your lunch break or whatever to take 5 minutes and call your representatives. So many website make this easy. Donate every bit of money you can spare--give up that coffee or cut down on extras and donate, donate, donate. Being a FB warrior is totally fine to blow off steam, but make sure you are matching your FB arguing time with your $$ and your actionable items like calling/writing reps.
I'm about read to protest in the streets. Rallies are being planned, and we have to show up to them. People are planning events at detention center and we have to go to them. Take a vacation day. Bring your kids if you have to. For people asking what marches and rallies "do", they put a face on the numbers who dissent--they make it an organized movement and they give the movement a voice. Plus, a lot of people are too comfortable in their own lives to care about issues--but getting a huge march on the news, or seeing their friends get involved--it makes the chances higher that they will get involved.

@Anagram: I second this. I live in the DC area and I don't do protests for a number of reasons, and sometimes it makes me feel completely useless, but I've decided that if I can do even some small things, like donating, that's something. It's really easy to get overwhelmed by things like this, I feel it all the time, especially as a person who came to the US as a refugee, and I thought this article was a good way to address that.

It is absolutely disgusting. And so are the people who defend it (I see you, moms on my local page...).
One suggestion for where to donate, if you're looking: https://www.raicestexas.org

my rage level is definitely at mach 10 over this bullshit. it's so horrifying i just don't even have the words. also gave to RAICES that @MrsSCB: linked.

HORRIBLE! I'm having a hard time concentrating at work because I just want to call my terrible, cruel Texas politicians. The way they're blaming the Dems for this is some chutzpah. UGH.

It is unconscionable. I cannot imagine the rage and helplessness of these parents when I think about how it would feel if someone took my kids. Just, omg.
But also, this kind of shameful, disgusting policy is nothing new even though it feels to many of us like it is. This is a good piece by a historian: https://nyti.ms/2LVkcjG

Can someone explain to me how the children are being cared for? I can't find any information about the actual care being given (not given). All I can think of is a cage full of 18 mo olds with dirty diapers, or breast-fed babies screaming to be fed. What about special needs kids? I'm struggling with even being able to read articles and research how to help because of these horrible things I'm imagining.
Our foster/child services system is already overwhelmed and broken(very broad generalization, sorry); our government has no system in place to handle this?
WHO IS TAKING CARE OF THESE KIDS?!?
coconut / 8472 posts
@jennlin821: I read a NYT article that said licensed care givers were taking care of them. It seemed somewhat like a daycare environment. Only in a creepy, depressing setting.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
@jennlin821: I read a couple accounts of foste parents talking about how sad some of the kids are. Between warehousing, for lack of a better term, and the foster system the kids basic needs are taken care of. At the separation points the govt officials are not allowed to touch, hug or physically comfort the crying children.
This is all absolutely traumatic. We’ve seen this story play out in American history before and yet here we are again.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@jennlin821: I read an article that there were caregivers, children are getting diaper changes, and there are beds and toys, BUT the caregivers are not really allowed to touch the children to comfort them. They can't hug them, hold them, rock them... I can't stop crying when I think of the idea of MY child crying for their mother and no one can even give them a tiny bit of physical comfort. These children will be scarred for life because of this.

I am sickened. And I'm so horrified by the people that KNOW personally who think "these people" shouldn't have come here. Then they'd still have their kids. It's so awful.
I get to go to a CLE next week to see how I can use my JD to help these poor kids and their parents. I don't speak Spanish and I have zero immigration experience, but I hope I can do something.

I've never been much of a political activist beyond voting for the candidate I think best represents me, but I wanted to share this site I just found. It makes it super easy to compose a message to your elected officials (which I just did for the first time ever over this issue).
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@Adira: I think I read the same article and I cried. As an immigrant myself, I simply cannot fathom the horror these families and children and experiencing.
I don't understand any human being can stand behind this
nectarine / 2243 posts
@Adira: that’s horrific. We treat our animals that are in the local county run animal shelters better than these kids (ie i can go volunteer and pet the kittens or puppies). I’d volunteer in a second to go hug and comfort crying babies and toddlers but my government won’t let me.
blogger / nectarine / 2043 posts
@Adira: Exactly this. I spent all weekend constantly touching my daughter because these stories are swimming in front of me and my insides turn at the very thought of not only being unable to respond to her upset, but for no one to be allowed to either.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Mrs. Carrot: Right?? I donated to RAICES, but I feel like I'm at the limit my heart can take on reading these horror stories.
I don't believe in Hell, but I hope there is somewhere where these people will burn for eternity for taking part in these cruel acts...
persimmon / 1023 posts
@jennlin821: this was exactly my thought/rage process as well. How in the hell is a child supposed to look after themselves alone in a cage?! Diapers, potty training, food, love, the list goes on and on. Thinking of my 3 year old in this situation makes me get teary and feel literally sick to my stomach. All weekend I just kept thinking of every small thing we do together and how much he needs his parents and our love to thrive. He depends on us for so much and to think of these children and families being ripped apart in an instant with no idea of when they will see each other again is too much to bear.
grapefruit / 4278 posts
@Adira: The AAP has even come out with a policy statement against separating children from their parents, "Highly stressful experiences, including family separation, can cause irreparable harm to lifelong development by disrupting a child’s brain architecture. Toxic stress, which is caused by prolonged exposure to heightened stress, has detrimental short- and long-term health effects."
http://www.aappublications.org/news/2018/06/14/washington061418
This is all so disgusting.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@kiddosc: It's disgusting that the AAP even felt like they HAD to come out with a statement. Isn't it just basic human decency to know that separating a child from its parent is HORRIFIC (unless there's abuse involved, of course)? But our leaders in Washington don't have human decency... We apparently haven't learned anything from the sins of the past...

This is the most distressing thing. I can not sleep or concentrate at work. PLEASE if you live in a state with a republican senator - CALL THEM NOW and beg them to support Diane Feinstein's bill (s.3036) to end this madness. (I believe all democratic senators have signed on to support, but you should call them too - thank them and ask them to DO EVEN MORE!) You can call 202-224-3121 and you will be connected.
If you don't like to call, text "resist"to 50409 and you can send faxes to your representatives via text. I do this EVERY DAY! It's super super super easy.
If you have any money to spare, please give to any or all of the following organizations (Below are links to their donation pages):

It’s monstrous. It’s straight up Nazi tactics, and that’s not something I throw around lightly. It boggles my mind that this is being allowed to happen. I switch between obsessively reading about it and shutting the internet off and trying to not think about it.
I want to find people who voted for Trump and shake them and yell “is this what you wanted? Is this what you were hoping for?!?!”

It's definitely not ok.
I talked to my elem. students about it today. I do a lot of 'design your solution' things with them so they are used to me bringing up current events and/or challenged to comment on how to create a solution. None of them had heard about the story but I had mentioned T wanting to build the wall, to a select group, earlier in the year. One kid actually googled the separation (we have laptops but he wasn't supposed to be using it at the time- oh well) while I was talking and he read off the headlines, saying there were 3 articles posted in the last 9 hours. When asked their opinion, they said - of course- no, they don't agree with the policy. The answer they agreed on was to write letters to the mayor and get the mayor to stop it.
Elem kids can figure it out, why can't the adults? Interestingly, one said that if Hillary was around, she would have done the same thing and just kept it a secret. Another lamented about the unfairness of his separation due to his parents' divorce. Then they started talking about email hacking and it was lunch, so I had to end it there.

@math.nerd: I cannot concentrate either and I just had to deal with a troll on a FB post of a friend trying to defend it. Saying that Obama started it, why don't we care about our kids and we only care about immigrant children (enter the largest eye roll ever). I kept trying to have her get the point and eventually, it was pissing me off so much I gave up. If someone doesn't want to see what is blatantly in front of them, I cannot make them.
Baby2Baby is putting together an amazon registry for the kids held, so I want to donate. The link isn't currently working, so i'll post when it does.

This is, once again, a morally reprehensible policy. Some of your suggestions are so useful and helped me to take action instead of just feeling overwhelmed and distraught. We can't let this happen.
